Footage inside of text question.

I need to have some text overlay some footage so that the footage is only revealed inside the letters of the text. The text is created in AE. I set the text as a luma matte and that does what I want except that it makes the colors in the BG footage desaturated. I have tried the other matte modes but only the luma one seems to do the trick. The BG is black. What am I missing?

track 2 (middle layer) > footage - set the track matte mode to the alpha matte of the text layer
track 3 (bottom layer)> background

track 2 track matte to alpha or luma? If you wanted to do some additional effects and maybe even precompose, wouldn't Luma be a better way, providing your text was white?
