howdy.
i'm having troubles with clips being darker when captured.
they look great on the dvx monitor but on the mac they're considerably darker.
the mac has brightness set to max but everything looks about 2-4 stops darker.
is there some setting i'm missing or way to adjust the color on capture.
dvx w/ fcp7 and macbookpro
thanks

NO way to adjust image on capture...firewire is a digital transfer.

DO NOT judge the quality of the image on the computer display. It does NOT show you what the footage really looks like. it is just a visible way to see what you are doing while cutting. If you want to see what your footage really looks like, route the signal from the computer to the camera to a TV.

Professionals NEVER judge the quality of the image on the computer display.

For some work yes, for some work no.

A lot of videos/films go straight to web and devices which are computer screens and not TVs.

I come from the world of print work. Colorimeters and luminance settings for desktop screens are a crucial part of the new world of non TV output, no different than the last decade of color management for print work.

My projects all look the same across my computers, iphone, ipad, web. That's my goal and may be the goal of many others.

It's hard to diagnose what the issue is for the OP. Jacking up the brightness on the computer is wrong no matter what.

Perhaps some more info as to the exact workflow that's leading to the darker footage.

workflow is dvx used for deck, log and capture to fcp7 on macbookpro through firewire.
i know that all monitors are different unless calibrated but shouldn't all videos i watch be dark if it was simply the monitor being darker...

DVX monitor? Tell us more about that. Are you sure that it's correct and you aren't simply underexposing your footage?

fcp 7 and snow leopard right?

gamma on quicktime X has changed - it screwed me too.

Go to your original OS X install disks and install QT7

then in QT7 preferences check the box marked 'use FCP gamma'

that's certainly a possibility.
are there settings for the dvx monitor, i looked but didn't see anything.
if nothing else i could adjust the monitor down a stop or 2 so i would get a better idea of what i'm shooting.

would that affect capture or just playback...

Definately playback. Not sure on capture as I have been tapeless for a while now.
I will go out on a limb here and say no it would not affect capture but there is a chance
I'm wrong.
Reason I say that is based on my experience with transcodes from capture codecs prior to switching back to pre snow leopard gamma
