Footage brightens during playbak

I noticed that depending on the type of footage I'm working with, the levels and saturation will change during playback. During playback, the footage may be bright.. but then as soon as I stop playback the footage goes back to dark. Anybody encounter this?

What type of footage is it. There's an ongoing preview bug in FCP that happens with some types. Not much to worry about. The image at pause is the correct one. I'd suggest a conversion to ProRes first- especially if this is say H.264 footage from a camera.

Thanks for the response Noah. Believe it or not it is ProRes Proxy footage.

The bug I'm having sounds exactly like the bug you're talking about though. I'm just surprised the ProRes footage is handling like this.

It's most likely your 640x480 frame size- it's not a standard one like 720x480 for FCP's realtime engine nor ProRes. If you had it at a more typical resolution such as NTSC or HD/720p or HD 1920x1080 you wouldn't see that shift. Where did this footage originate?

I'm surprised that the frame size affected the realtime engine. I've been trying to develop a format to transcode to in order to edit lots of footage effortlessly, then reconnect the high quality files. That's the reason for going to a small frame size.. but it seems to be counter productive if this color shifting is going to happen.

The original footage is h264 from the 7d.

720x480 and check anamorphic in the encodes. That is what NTSC compliant 16:9 is...
