Footage appears to "FIZZ" when burned via DVDSP

I've had a lot of problems recently getting a few films of mine; 3 SD films and 2 HD together on a disc.

I've now created great menu assets etc on DVDSP (although the stills slideshows are pretty poor quality with light but annoying pixelisation - (is DVDSP just rubbish at this or is there a solution?).

My major issue however is that the films appear to have , well what can only be described as a "fizz" on them. Its a busy-ness somewhat like a deinterlacing issue that causes vertical "stepping" on the clean lines of the nose for example, but also manifests its self as a noise on other areas.

Does anyone know what is causing this? Is it happening at the FCP stage or during the DVD authoring? I'm at a loss to find a solution so fellow film makers, I NEED YOUR HELP!

Thanks in advance

you are trying to mix sd and hd on the same dvd? what is the format of the dvd that you are creating, it can't be both.

It's a standard defination DVD I'm making, the films were shot in those formats so there is some down conversion on two of the films. This I've tried that down conversion at the FCP output stage and at the DVD authoring stage. I've burned many discs changing settings etc. Have just burned one with a 1% gaussian blur on a film to see how it looks, and it's not solved the issue sadly... another hour or so down the drain... I reckoin I've burned about 20 odd test discs and still have this problem. This is week 2 of trying to produce a decent disc. On a number of levels iDVD handled the footage better... but suffered in other ways.

It's a very odd phenemona which I hope can be solved soon... DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT IS CAUSING THIS?

Here'sa screen grab from the output DVd showing the stepping. I am almost 100% certain this is happening at the DVD authoring stage.

OK QUICK FOLLOW UP - This problem does NOT arise (at least not nearly as noticeably) in iDVD as I just burned a test DISC. So whats the encoding used on iDVD - anyone have the answer to that specific question?

I'm thinking I may be able to rip the encoding from a idvd made disc and drop that into the DVDSP project - Does this sound crazy or is there an expert out there who can back up this plan of action?

Again the slideshows made in iDVD look significantly better than those made in DVDSP !

I have now been able to rip the files from iDVD and import them into DVDSP. This has given me clean lines, at the cost of slightly more background noise, and has illiminated the "fizz" - I used Mpeg Streamclip to demux the files and imported directly into DVDSP after that process.

I record it here for future reference. I hope this helps someone out in the future as this DVD creation process has been in turns soul destroying, frustrating and downright horrendous every step of the way. 14 days or so after I started out to create a DVD of these films, I am only now getting the results I had hoped for.

Good luck to others in this situation. I'll be looking for a new Mpeg2 encoder. Anyone have any suggestions?
