Food Network Uses the DVX

I don't know if this was posted before but I was just watching Alton Brown's show called "Feasting on Asphalt." During a piece of the segment, he was being filmed while filming a lady who was making biscuits and he was using the good ol' DVX. Every now and then they'd cut to what he was shooting and it looked identical to the rest of the show. It looked great.

Every now and then, its great to get that reminder that its okay to not be HD.

One of my favorite shows!

Hopefully Alton won't "Feast on Asphalt" like he did LAST season when he broke a collar bone!

Yeah me too. I've never seen Feasting on Asphalt before tonight. But I LOVE Good Eats.

In fact, I am a huge fan of most ALL of the food network shows. I am a fan of the production value of them. They are somehow simple yet incredibly entertaining at the same time. I have often thought about filming a spec version on one. My friend is a great cook and has a beautiful kitchen and I've often thought about doing another show.

But, now ya need a theme. From Everyday Italian to 30 Minute Meals....you need to be cooking for a reason. And, truth be told, my friend doesn't really romance the camera....

But now that I KNOW that Alton Brown and especially The Food Network using the DVX I feel much better about strapping my two cams to tripods and giving it a go. Anyone out there want to be in a food show?? Anyone? Bueller?

Yeah, I saw one on that show last season... It was talked about already though... you're right :)

I like Alton... I watch way too much Food Network... The wifey loves it... But, she's a great cook, so I can't complain, heh.

Giada's show uses the Varicam, I believe. I saw an unwrapped episode about it and saw the Varicam and that they shoot 24p, etc, etc. One camera only. Shoot wide first, and then close ups later....

Yes to confirm more DVX usage by the food network i was recently filming a concert in D.C. and food network shooters were also there shooting for the show Ace of Cakes and all of them had DVX100's :)

jason-

I figured it probably was. And, I did do a search on it but sometimes the search function sucks...but...

Since, I didn't get to be part of the Original thread (pointed out to me by Jason Ramsey) I will go ahead and agree....Giada Delaurentis AND Rachael Ray are both VERY hot!

maybe this thread needs to be about how much I love Alton Brown - making his gyro loaf today. Have to go buy a beefier food processor though - darn... Sometimes I'm not sure if my kitchen appliance addiction is worse than my production equipment addiction...

I'm assume most of you already know this about Alton Brown - but since it hasn't been mentioned in this thread - I'll throw it out there.

From Wikipedia:

Prior to his cooking career, Brown received a degree in drama from the University of Georgia. He then worked in cinematography and film production. In that field, he is probably best known for his work as the director of photography for the R.E.M. music video, "The One I Love." He also worked as a steadicam operator on the Spike Lee film School Daze.

At some point, he noticed that he was very dissatisfied with the quality of cooking shows then airing on American television, so he set out to produce his own show. Not possessing the requisite knowledge, he enrolled in the New England Culinary Institute, from which he graduated in 1997

So it's no wonder we all seem to like his shows.

Wow I knew he had some previous production experience but I didnt know about the REM video or that he was steadicam operator. Explains why he hangs out with his crew so much and is always including them in things. And he's just freakin hilarious. Gyro loaf is in the oven... smells good :)
