font facts...no guessin

I heard that windows preloads fonts and can slow your machine down. My startup routine has two Norton products loading and nothing else. I don't want to compromise the speed of this machine so......Where do these fonts load and who is loading them or are they really loading into the memory? Using win 2000 pro, and I'm not seeing any eveidence of any preloaded font issues. I,m asking because I would like an answer from one who knows the actual deal and not second hand windows urban myth told to them by Billy bob who used to work at the local computer store before he started washing dishes for the school board. Thanks

Re: font facts...no guessin

How many fonts are in your font folder?

They all load by default, so you won't find a setting.
I depends on how many you have loaded on your system.

btw, I don't answer to Billy Bob any more since the voices stopped. ;D

Re: font facts...no guessin

Oh....Ummm...Not that many, I don't know, fifteen hundred I think give or take

Re: font facts...no guessin

Well.......bingo. Major system hog.

Generally, try to keep then to under a hundred.

Create a new folder, put in into the C: root ie: c:\sparefonts, and do a cut and paste of about 1400 of then into that folder so you have them if you need them. They only load fron the C:\WINDOWS\Fonts folder. restart and see if there's a difference.

Re: font facts...no guessin

1500 sounds like a lot to me.  I have 206 in the Fonts folder. I suggest removing most of your fonts (pick and choose). You can store them in a seperate folder and whenever you are going to do a design project just plop them back in. Typically you don't need to reboot windows to load fonts. Just drop them into the fonts folder and then load your design software.

Good luck!

EDIT: D'oh! Pookie types quicker than I do.  :)

Re: font facts...no guessin

I have run system with three fonts and the fifteen hundred and seen no speed difference. I'm not having issues with performance so why would I need to move the fonts? I would like to know the details behind the preload is all. Are we talking a grab at system memory perhaps? If so, which files in task manager would reflect that mem usage?

Re: font facts...no guessin

So I just selected all the font's in my folder and did a properties on them like I do with any other group of files in a folder to find out how much space they're takin up.....Well, font's done that way open a window for each and every one of them. Never seen so many little windows on one screen. Not true...I once saved 10 minutes of bitmap sequence video at 30 fps to the desktop without realizing.....Not a good desktop wallpaper!. Anyway average font size is 10 kb, so is 1,500 going to be a huge deal?

Re: font facts...no guessin

When you load your design software you will notice a speed difference because your software (Photoshop, etc.) must load all the fonts in your font folder. Is that right?

Re: font facts...no guessin

21 mb on disk, so if they are all preloading into memory I loosing 21 mb of available system memory. Is this something I should be concerned with when I,m running 1024mb of ram? Or is it hogging other rescources that I'm not aware of?

Re: font facts...no guessin

You're losing resourses, not [memory], god I hate explaining these memory things :'(.

It's the same thing where after you've been using your computer for a while, and it begins to take longer to open files, render etc. The available memory will appear fine, but the resourses are dropping too low. Things like programs not releasing memory, loaded fonts, wallpaper, screen savers etc.....

i think i should have listened to the voices :-/

Re: font facts...no guessin

well thanks Pookie, I don't understand it much better than I did before, I was looking for an answer that defined where, what and why more closely, but to be fair I should probably ask this question on a computer forum somewhere.

Re: font facts...no guessin

Actually a little poking on the net got the answer. Windows 2000 does not lose system rescourses as they are handled dynamically, as long as you have the ram your application can have it. Running this many fonts before th NT system ie win95,98,me would have been an issue but not the case now with NT. Rescources are released after application stops using them.

Re: font facts...no guessin

It's true that Windows NT and XP now support an "unlimited" number of resources. But, that does not mean that the OS does not need to allocate space to manage them. The more space used the more the chance of causing memory to be swapped out to disk. Swapping kills your speed.

Also, applications may not cleanly handle large numbers of fonts. On startup of an app, it might load each font so it can store info about the font. The more the fonts the longer the startup. Plus, the more memory just that one application uses.

Personally, I like to reduce the number of fonts because it speeds booting my computer. Also, I don't like searching for the fonts I use most often among a huge list of fonts.

Here's some more info on dealing with fonts:

Re: font facts...no guessin

Thanks Hans....I have read some of the info on the pages you sent and it clearly states that fonts are not a real issue with windows 2000 pro. My font heavy files ie Photoshop, are loading at the same speed and running just as fast with 1500 fonts loaded as they do with the normal windows set. I am mostly loading Adobe type font's and very few True type. The Adobe fonts are as a rule way smaller than true type. So not seeing any speed issues that affect performance I think I'll hang on to the fonts for now but of course I will reorganize if I have any problems :)
