Follow focus for HVX/SGpro, what works, what doesn't

I'm thinking of purchasing an indifocus pro from a man on here. I'd love to hear what you guys have to say about it. (yes i've searched and read other reviews) It's very affordable, but if it doesn't get the job done then there's no point in me buying it. I see theres a great range in price between FF's like this one and an arri, which worries me. A lot of features i work on the focus is shallow and focus is so critical I have to depend on this FF working for me.

IF anyone could give me some advice on if this is a good purchase, if it will get the job done, if theres a better one out there for me, etc etc, that would be wonderful. thankyou!

Hey Scribbles, it really depends on how much you're willing to spend but there's definitely a difference.

I have pictures and a mini-review on the newest crop of Redrock Follow Focus. Just got mines about two weeks ago and I've used Cinetech and Arri to pull on. It's right up there with those that cost twice as much.

yah, I agree with Kholi, The RR FF's are the most impressive to me. Tho I have yet to see a finish FF from Dennis, from what it sounds like his FF is going to be quite impressive also. Shoot35's FF has gotten some mixed reviews, but it seem like a solid FF from what it sounds like. I recommend going new.

I'm still curious about SG's FF. Have yet to see a review on it. Owned a RR and thought it's a great deal or the price. Only drawbacks are its flimsy marker and the inability to flip the gear to the otherside of the box. This makes rigging the FF on the right side a bit of a pain and still have the mattebox flush. I now own a Chrosziel which I think is truly amazing and in a different class than the RR. But at a price. If I didn't luck out and find one for sale at almost half retail, I'd still be looking or still be using the RR.

I've tested the Petroff and find its build and action to be quite pro at a nicer price the Chrosz.

If money's not an object, I'd stick with Chros. For about 400 less you can own a petroff and about 600 less than that you can have a RR.

I was swapping the indifocus with the redrock ff all weekend on a shoot and I have to say I was impressed w/ both.

They both held up well in a dusty environment.

I own an Indifocus and am happy with it. I was pulling focus myself with a 135mm lens.

Is the indiFOCUSpro compatible with the SG Pro? I ask because I own one, and the way its designed the base clamp actually needs to sit underneath my brevis a little because the gear driver extends forward from the gear box quite a bit. Obviously the SGPro's front box connects to the rails so there's no way the FF can slide underneath it in order to line up the gears.

Unlike the indiFOCUSpro, RR and SG follow focus have designed their units so that the clamp sits pretty much underneath or close to their gear driver. Its a more compact unit, which gives more freedom to move back and forth on the rails.

If anyone has used the indifocuspro with the sgpro, please let me know if this was an issue or not.

Arrik, just talk to time, when I bought my indie focus Time asked what adapter I was using and I said I was using the SGPro, Time said you need a gearbox mount, he throws it in free for all sgpro users, my indiefocus will be in tomorrow, Im excited, I will be shooting a short with it tomorrow DVX/SGPRO/IndieFocus Rig, Ill get some prodution pics up soon.

I had a very similar issue with my indiFOCUSpro and M2. It just barely works, but it works. I did have to sell off a Nikon Series E 50mm though because the lens barrel was too short and I couldn't move the FF back any further. That is a very, very short barrel though - all my other Nikons work with it.

Good to know, Will. Yeah I was assuming M2 owners would experience the same issue. I am using ZF lenses. They arent exactly small lenses so hopefully they arent too short for the gear driver. My SG Pro was dispatched today so I'll know soon enough if my indiFOCUSpro is compatible. Hopefully, I wont have to order another part. I dont see why Tim just doesnt shave down the gear driver's base extension for all units. Not sure if there's any purpose for it being so long.

Thanks all for your input.

Just wanted to follow up on the SG Pro / Indifocus compatability for anyone in the same boat. As John suggested, I contacted Tim. You can purchase the gearbox mount for $20 if you already own the standard version. The replacement piece looks exactly like the L-shaped piece found on current, standard versions. The only difference is this piece is wider so it moves the gearbox further back.

I received it the other day. It works great. Takes 1 minute to install. Doesn't compromise sturdiness or anything. I can use it with the shortest of lenses. Simple and effective fix. If you are planning on purchasing an indifocuspro for your SGPro setup, I'd let Tim know before you purchase, so he can build with the proper mount. Shouldnt cost new buyers a thing to switch to the SG mount. Kudos to Tim & Indifocus.
