FOG 3D--What the hell?

I have been trying to add fog to a simple imported video clip. I know I am an idiot and there is probably something really easy I'm not doing...what is it? How can I use that stupid effect?

you have to use files whch include z-depth in them. RLA file format does this, and that's the best (and could be only) way to use that effect. Basically you have an extra channel in your image which tells a compositor the "depth" of your image. Then the 3D Fog is applied, and objects represented as distant become more foggy. Kind of like an aplha channel, but for depth.

If you don't have such an image, you could create fog in your scene using a particle generator (I recommend Particular), or make a layer and render clouds on it, drop the opacity down and possibly put it in screen mode, move it across the screen, etc. Just a quick & dirty way.

Could you elaborate a little on this? I'de like to know how use that method.

ok....

ok....

http://designer.pri.ee/after_effects/1_21_7_0.htmlOk I downloaded the RLA format and now I'm really lost...do I have to convert clip-I don't see how that is possible. Is there nothing that AAE gives us to make this an easier process? What about a depth of field matte or something? Is there anyway to pick parts of a scene and assign them a certain depth along the Z axis? I appreciate the tips so far, but I'm still about to throw my monitor out the window...

it works for the alien on the right...http://designer.pri.ee/after_effects/1_21_7_0.html

thanks for the tips, they do work, but why add an effect called Fog 3D if you cannot use it in After Affects, it don't make no sense...

You can... in the example you showed above it's in a composite timeline. It is only affecting the layer of that alien on the right.

Make a fog layer (fractal noise with animated evolution or w/e you use to make clouds) and drop it on top of the footage using screen blending mode (or maybe normal mode and try playing with opacity). Might wanna use Ramp on it, too, or mask it the way you need. Move it around if the camera movement calls for it, just make it bigger than the comp size then.

ye but it is easier to record some cloudsz on the sky... you can even use it as a blue-screen footage :)
