Focusing Screen

With the new brevis element coming out I wouldnt' drop more than 200 usd on this. Also, I'd have to see it work with an hv20 before I buy it. OR, send me one and I'll betta test it with my hv20 :) . I'll post tons of samples and a review for you to!

Bad LUT in Color bad noise...

Bad LUT in Color bad noise...

I investigate about the noise... it was a wrong LUT in Color that cause this... late night working is a bad thing, so I will rerender them and upload the corrected with no noise... Varicam in +3db doesn't have that much noise!

Astigmatic I would like to test it... send me a PM with address, email and mobile phone and I will see what I can do...

Guys I will have four samples, by the end of August, for testing, I would prefer European testers because of customs implications when you will return the samples...

But all offers will be evaluated... EX users also accepted...

There's an fiber optic company out here in FLA thats' going to let me try out a few of their screens. They custom make everything down to 6microns. So, hopefully I'll get my hands on some and post some results. They can range all the way up to 150mm. They have diffusers and faceplates. I'm really excited to see what they have to offer.

so any updates on this Evangelos?
Tomorrow morning I'm waiting DHL to knock my door... today they just passed customs...

Soon my friends I will look for beta testers...

The bad thing is that my Varicam is shooting a feature until 4th of September and I have to collaborate with my close friend (the DoP of the movie) and take same test shots...

I can help with testing here in the UK if you need someone. Running a Brevis with Canon FD lens (50mm f1.4 + 28mm f2 + 85mm f2)

Mooose, what camera you got?

I was thinking, that is wrong to call a Fiber screen Ground glass, because its not grounded, so is more accurate to call it focusing screen as the title of the thread is.

Said that, there is a big difference between diffused screens and not diffused. I would like to buy a CFX element for my Brevis also, but the focusing screen its a different beast. I thing its a matter of taste, there is no better, its just different. They do have different behaviors so someone can select what is better for the job thats planing to shoot. Also due to manufacturing process the one is more expensive than the other, but that doesn't mean that one is better than the other.

The good thing is that we have all these options... with Brevis35!

definitely try it on the hv20. This pretty much could be the best thing to happen to vibrating adapters in years, seriously.

Sorry for the lack of feedback... but I touched my camera for few hours yesterday to evaluate the quality of the parts received... the are very good, there is no eye visible blemishes on all parts... I tested two of them, and boy if the blemishes that are visible by camera was smaller than a pixel... that would be the perfect static screen!... you turn vibration off and only blemishes appears as dead pixels absolutely no grain visible, bokeh is exactly the same... flip the switch to vanish these few blemishes...

In few days we will shoot an entire scene of the movie with Brevis and fiber screen... until then patience....

I was busy on the Rev2. of my GG.relay which is just finished and supports flipped adapters also… news on that are coming very soon… I'm actually looking for testers/sponsors at this point for the first eight relays...

The first pieces of my fiber screen, they had a convex side, which was creating a vignetting. I’m waiting next week to test the final samples, which are having a better angle on the curve of the convex side… and slightly different coatings.

News are coming in few days...

OK guys this is the first tests of the fiber screens.

The setup used was a Varicam > GG.relay Rev2 > Brevis MP.1 > Zeiss 50mm F1.4 ZF, the recording was on AVC-Intra 100 @ 1280x720.

A fellow member has noticed, in the past, very good bokeh , so I did first a study on that...

I compared with best Cinevate screen which is , for me, the new CFXL to have a reference...

The results are in the attached image which is a crop of the whole image...

The pros of the fiber screen are:

Almost double sharpness or higher MTF.
No diffusion, so has much better contrast on details.
More blurred background.
Exceptional bokeh rendition.
Less vignetting.
Better handling of highlights (no flare to blacks).
Even non vibrating is much cleaner than anything else...!

To wrap it up, it resembles the lens image with the minimal loss in image quality.

The cons of the fiber screen:

1/2 stop more light loss than CFX...!

More tests and footage will come in the next days...

Note. The element is the CFXL not the CFX1L as stated in the jpg...

very cool. Can do tests showing how it looks stopped down past f4? Pointing it towards specular highligts or at backgrounds with lots of overlaying texures, such as leaves against sky? that would be cool.. thanks!

also, how did you calculate the 1/2 stop light diff. I noticed in your image you had to stop down to f4 with the brevis to match the lighting of the fiber at f2.8. Isn't that a 1 1/2 stop difference?
