Focusing Screen

i will drop 300 if it solves GSE, vignetting and gets me some good bokeh with decent light loss. IF not then heck no!

Well,

if you own a 1500$ - 20 000$ Adapter with good High Speed lenses and you earn your money with that.....Do it.

But...if you own a 100-500$ Adapter and cheap leses (Arsat, Soligor etc) then.....a Wax Screen, Canon EE, Nikon D and AlexMD GGs will do the job. Especially if you filming your garden, cat, the street in front of your house and so on :-)

But in DIY and High End anything crazy is allowed :-)

I was being serious. Someone said that Scotch tape works really well. Someone try it and post footage.

I'm finally getting around to building one this weekend for the heck of it. I've got a Nikon D screen, going to make a wax one, and I'll try the tape as well. Should be interesting...

I heard that Scotch & Soda gives a nice bokeh even without any adapter if you have the right amount.

Back in the days - at the dawn of the 35mm adapter were Scotch tape and CD plactic wafer the "poor man" solutions. Today, everyone should understand that ground glass based on optical glass, fiber and plastic only deliver the quality for HD.

Scotch Tape was used with DV cams but the increased resolution of HD requires better gg. As Car3o said....the other con sides are obvious.

The better way for dead-drop cheap gg is....take a Multicoated UV filterglass...grind it with the "known" 0.25 micron paste grinder....and voila.

Yeah lets not forget the veggie bag craze of 76'. What a year that was huh? That bokeh was straight up ass 'G', but people swore it looked good. Ben Winter put one on his old Letus35 lol. You could hear it whistle in the wind like an old man's kazoo. And not for nothin' Junky, most of the people in this section were here for the dawn of the age of Agus, so you don't need to impress us with your memories of yore. If anything you're bringing up painful memories for those of us who had say the first letus flip and tried to use it with an HVX, and it looked like a bunch rice crispies dancing on my image. But yeah their ain't a screen out that we all haven't thought about or attached to a spinabrator.

Hmmm, I haven't test a scotch tape... I will...

If someone read the patent of Arri that DIYjanky post, it will realizes that its about vibrating a Fiber screen, in order to vanish the dead fibers... So not even Arri have solve the problem of dead fibers! If you search the cited patents on Arris you will realize that fiber screens are superior than regular grinded GGs or in general diffused screens...

Has anyone tested a CLA35HD Angeniuex/Zeiss adapter, it has a very good relay design incorporated with 12 lens 10 groups! wow lot of glass, it has no light loss, actually it increases the sensitivity by 1 stop!

All that I have read about it was that it didnt had 35 DoF because of no use of GG.

Has anyone tested this adapter or knows a rental house that has it?

@ cinebuddy

Yeah. The veggie bag :-) I dont want to impress - just want to clear some urban legends. Scotch Tape was good in the old DV Cam days where the cam resolution was low. With the HD Cams you cant use Scotch Tape as static...maybe as vibrating. So, you understandme wrong. My english is only "so-so" and therefore my comments seems harsh. Sorry about that :-)

@ Evangelos

I did read the patent and you are right - but I worked with Arri Cameras and only once i saw a 2 little black dots on a GG.....but on the corner of the GG. The cheap fiber has more dots visible (my test screen has 7 dots). I think Postmaster was lucky and got a "clean" one.

The CLA35HD is a very good optical device and its purpose was to use film lenses due to the lack of various special HD lenses several years ago. It´s only a very HQ Adapter because the DOF will remain the same as with video lenses but it will correct the Focal lenght - so 50mm Lens will stay 50mm on a CCD camera. We used one in 2005 for a shoot - very good equipment but only for use as PL Mount Adapter to use High Speed Lenses from Cooke and Zeiss.

@ Scotch Tape

Cost in germany 6 Dollar! AlexMD lens 15 Dollar! Self-grinded GG 7 Dollar!

The Scotch tape has a very soft look and the light loss is visible. If you buy a cheap Multicoated UV Filter and DIY your GG...it will cost almost the same. But I think in the US...Scotch tape is much cheaper :-)

DIYJunky about CLA35HD, do you remember the light loss, did it has what they say, that was increasing sensitivity? The DoF was really 2/3? edge sharpness?

About Fiber GG, the 0,025mm aka 25microns its not visible with naked eye... so the defects that you discussing should be in the range of 80microns and larger. My manufacture was able to deliver less than 12microns screens but then the cost is rising considerably! Let us see how they behave the ones that I'm expecting by the end of month and then we will see if the extra cost is worth it.

6 Bucks...good grief that's price gouging.
