Focusing question

I have a question about focusing in un-controlled/documentary situations.

The tricky thing about shooting out in the field is that the distance from the camera & subject change a lot. So in these situations I keep on zooming in & out to re-establish focus. Is there a trick I can do to avoid zooming in & out so much? Because I feel I miss other things by zooming in & out to re-focus, & also it breaks up the mood if the camera keeps transitioning from a far shot to a close-up, back to a far shot.

Any shooting tips would be much appreciated!

Outdoors or with bright enough lights indoors, keep the aperature as small as possible to get a good-sized depth-of-focus.

Also, I find it helpful to turn up the sharpness on the monitor/viewfinder and use a focus assist feature if your camera has one. With that, you will often be able to see where your focus lies, especially if your viewfinder is B/W.
