shooting a doc with the adapter and I'm about to give up and go for squeeze mode because you basically can't zoom into a close-up without focus issues. Any suggestions?

As I've been learning with the adapter on my HV20, you can't hardly zoom in at all even though the manual says you can zoom in a little. Focus is always an issue, but in a film workflow it's always an issue anyway. For documentary stuff, I think you'd be better off using squeeze mode unless you can move the camera in closer to the subject, which is the best way to keep focus in check. It works best at its widest it seems.

Yep, you've discovered the struggle of working with the anamorphic adapter. In the back of The DVX Book there's a whole chapter devoted to that piece of hardware and the various hoops you have to jump through to extract the best performance from it.

^^What he said. There are some great tutorials in the DVX section on how to do this properly and yield great results.
