Focus/Distance Chart for DVX plus checklist.

Hey guys... I just did a search for "focus chart" and nothing came up so just in case some of you aren't familiar with this link HERE IT IS... DVX100 (not "A" but I'll bet they're close) FOCUS CHART.

I've been using a printout of this for a while and I've found it very helpful at times. Oh sure you lucky guys with your new-fangled DVX100-Aaaaaa may not have as much of an issue, but who knows? Some of you may appreciate this also...

EDIT... I had a great focus chart link that I made here also... but it looks like a good way to open up my computer to the world... I guess I need to make sure I'm not doing that first... more to follow... sorry.

Barry Green did an updated version for the 100A, if you search I'm sure it will pop up.

Here is the extract from Barry's update, if u are still interested

Barry writes:

The problem with the chart is that each focus # on the DVX has a significant amount of "wiggle room"... i.e., the difference between 89 and 90 is about 13 feet! There's enough movement on the ring between those numbers that they could probably have spelled out 89.1, 89.2, 89.3, etc.

In any case, here's the updated numbers for the 100A:

1' 11.5" 37
2' 0.75" 38
2' 1.5" 39
2' 2.25" 40
2' 3.25" 41
2' 5.25" 42
2' 6.75" 43
2' 8.25" 44
2' 10.25" 45
3' 46
3' 2.25" 47
3' 4" 48
3' 6.75 49

Re: Focus/Distance Chart for DVX plus checklist.

Thanks Guys! I don't know how many of you actually use these focus charts but I love 'em. I can judge distance quickly and accurately... but neither the LCD or the EVF works all that great for critical focus... besides, in a flash I think it's easier to know the distance and just spin to a number and not worry about what your eyes are seeing.

When I made my own focus chart I also dumped all the fractions of an inch... you can get your chart a lot cleaner if you do that. Show me somebody who can judge the difference between 5.25" and 5"... or 6.75" and 7"... besides, focus is a little fuzzy anyway... sometimes I want more focus ahead of the subject to further "pop" them off the background OR I'll purposely soften focus to hide flaws or combat moire'.

So if you've got a chart with 1/4" and 1/2" increments, do yourself a favor and reprint it with rounded numbers...

Where is the focal plane on the camera? I don't see any marking for it.

Re: Focus/Distance Chart for DVX plus checklist.

That's a good point GenJerDan! People are using charts with 1/4" increments and now let's debate the actual focal plane in a cam that's a foot long.

If I were to guess, and I'm about to, the focal plane is measured from the CCD surface out... which should be somewhere about the "3CCD" badge on the side... there's a prism which splits the light for each ccd so who knows for sure, unless we search for it... but you could safely assume it's close to that badge and probably no further back then the USER 1 and 2 buttons.

Either way I still say keep your chart simple as a flash card and round your inches up or down.

Re: Focus/Distance Chart for DVX plus checklist.

We don't really know where the focal plane is, but for the purposes of the focus chart, Evin established using the back of the shoe (side closest to the top-handle record button). That's our substitute focal plane indicator...

Re: Focus/Distance Chart for DVX plus checklist.

Look at the side of your camera... the "3CCD" badge is right at the back of the hotshoe. Pretty good guess for a punk, eh?
