flying - bag/pelican

I'm sitting here looking at all of this gear I have (M2 - Hvx - Nikon - HD Monitor) and wondering how in the heck am I going to get it all on the plane as carry on without having it go through baggage. I’m heading to New Zealand a week after next (as of tomorrow I will be able to say I leave next week) on two different Airlines, Alaska and Quanta’s. Alaska will charge for the extra bag.

Two things that bother me about sending my gear through baggage;

1 – Will it all show up at the other end when I arrive?
2 – Will that X-Ray machine that they use damage any of the gear?

I understand X-Ray machine is much stronger than what they use as carry on.

I have the 1600 Pelican case as my carry on but it seems that not everything will fit.

I was thinking maybe I will have to get a heavy duty camera bag that will hold the HVX (attached to the M2 gear) and the Ikan 8” Monitor and send everything else though baggage.

OR

Get a bigger Pelican case to put all the other gear in and keep the camera and monitor in the 1600 and carry it on?

Any feed backs? Any idea what would be a very heavy-duty camera bag? Thanks

Normal airline regs say that you can carry one carryon bag and one personal item, but I take two carry on bags with me pretty much every time I fly.

I do not trust anything in checked baggage, so I would recommend carrying everything on. Just pack everything into two bags and you should be good.

That being said I have always been ready to take out my camera and call it my "personal item" if they say that one of my bags needs to be checked, so just keep that in mind... Pack everything that you absolutely don't want to be checked in one bag and all else in another bag.

Cheers,

How good is a camera bag for traveling? I know the Pelican is great but can I get a strong enough bag that everything will be safe and protected?

You might want to gate check these items so that you do not have the issue of trying to find a place to put them.

i use the kata hb207 for my hvx. its no hard case but it can hold quite a bit of stuff. and its a backpack so doesnt look like it has $10k worth stuff in it.

I'd be surprised if the airlines will allow the Pelican 1600 to be a carry on. You may be pushing your luck with that one as it's a very deep case.

IMO- Never ever check your camera. That's a carry on item. The Pelican bag is more than adequate for carry on protection- a carry on bag doesn't need to be bullet proof. What may be important given your situation, is that it be carry-able and serve well in that capacity once you get to your destination.

For my HVX, I've resorted to the back pack route. Everything else gets checked in.
