is there such a thing?

something like a caselite that gives off a hard focusable light source, for when maximum control is required.

also, is the soft-only light output from the caselite a disadvantage?

i'm looking at getting some lights at some point soonish, and i'm leaning toward daylight balanced fluoros (caselite in particular) i'm just a bit concerned that not having a hard daylight balanced source could limit my options.

No such thing as a focusable fluorescent hard light. The surface area is too big and its not concentrated enough. Only tungsten or HMI are suitable for hard light and focusing in a fresnel type instrument.

You would want to stick with HMI's such as our coming 150w CMH model which puts out daylight (or tungsten) color equivalent to a 650w fresnel and in fact is in a compact 650w size fresnel package similar to Arri. We also have plastic fluorescent models coming in October which are far lighter than the Diva or Caselight. I've posted some information on them recently on this site.

that looks quite interesting, does it produce a lot of heat?

The fixture itself gets a bit hot as does the bulb but the light produced is very cool compared to tungsten light. There just isn't the infrared component that there is with tungsten. We decided to start selling these CMH / HMI solutions because they are energy efficient by a four to one ratio (like fluorescent) to tungsten. However, it should be stressed that the bulbs get intensely hot themselves. They don't call that family "High Intensity Discharge" for nothing! ;-)

Anyway, the 150w model will be perfect for the traveling videographer doing a lot of interview setups but not wanting to heat the room up.

Come to the American Film Market and check out The Lumen and Lumen Mini. They're a fundamentally different (and we think better) approach to lighting.

Hard light, soft light, variable lumen output, multiple color temperatures, tongue-and-groove exterior case which allow for lego-like construction of large arrays...and we're pricing our lights for the prosumer market.

So, uh, how do we find out more about the lights? I am not exactly sure what the American Film Market is???
 
The American Film Market is an annual event in Santa Monica. 800 million dollars worth of movies are bought and sold during this 7 day event. The only market larger than it on the planet is Cannes (which many think is a film festival when in reality it is both a market and a fest at the same time).

AFM can be very expensive, but since we're sponsors we have guest passes and can get any DVXuser in for free to visit our booth. You'll get to see the light up close, hold it in your hand and test it out.
