Fluorescent Worklights

I've used something very similar before. As long as you are looking for diffused light and not too concerned about color temperature, that might work fine.

Definitely. Used lights are the way to go. You can save some money and not worry about banging them around a bit. I think a used Tota usually goes for around $70 on eBay.

Of course, if you have a little bit more to spend, I'd try to find some used fresnels (old Strand fresnels go for cheap because no one knows about them). They're leagues better than the Totas.

I've had some luck with usedmovielighting.com. Even Craigslist can be worthwhile keeping an eye on.

They don´t put out enough light. If you end up with light in the range of a single 80 watt bulb your lucky - probably it will be less.

When I was just starting to experiment with continuous lighting, I did the whole DIY thing with two sets of Home Despot worklights; they're heavy, dim, take a while to fit with mountings for light stands, and the flicker like crazy...you can futz with shutter speed but it doesn't totally get rid of it. Wish, instead, I'd have gotten some of Richard's fluorescent light kits instead.

Fun experiment, but having done it, I wouldn't recommend it for decent lighting. Buy a Lowel Tota and a huge piece of foamcore for bouncing instead, practically same cost, all-in! :-)
