Flolight LED 500 - Any users out there?

Good day all!

I'm looking for some fluorescent or LED lights to bring back her to Israel on my next trip to the states. I'm considering going LED, specifically the Flolight LED 500. Anyone had the chance to give one of these a try? I review from Bill Pryor (from dvinfo) on these lights says they performed as advertised.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

Michael

Interesting. My concern with those would be color temp. Lower cost units could be almost anywhere in the spectrum. Also, you'd probably need 4x those to equal the output of one LED 500, which would make it about the same cost.

They say mine is equal 350W.

....yeah, right. It´s about 150W.

But it is like the flourescent energy saving bulbs they claim 8 watt is like 60 watt.

It`s not. Your camera will tell the difference.

I also do not belive the Flolight is equal 500Watt.

But I´m quite happy with that cheap light. The color temp is pretty close to Daylight and I can get about 3 of the big and 2 small for the price of one 500 Flolight including shipping and tax to Germany.

For you the Euro rate must be a PITA

But I´m quite sure they sell them in the USA too - meverything comes from China anyways.

Remeber theat round Light from Flolight that you put on the camera mic?
They sold it for $150. You now can buy the same thing on Ebay as a tent light called UFO light for $5.

I also am skeptical that it is anywhere near the same as a 500w output for drawing only 40w--that would be roughly 10,000 lumens worth of light. That would make the LEDs in it performing at 250 Lumens per watt and that's impossible with today's technology. The most they get in a laboratory right now is 110 LPW or something like that and those are LEDs which are not out in the mainstream. The more common garden variety LED is giving about 40 LPW. If you get it, please report back and let us know what you find.

In this article:

the reviewer used a light meter at 8-10 ft, and found the LED bank about a stop brighter than Lowell Caselight 2 ( 2 - 55w tubes).

So maybe it does not put out the equivalent of 500w hot, but then probably neither do a pair of 55w tubes.

Therefore, for me the more relevant issue is how does it compare to a similar fluorescent fixture.

Florecent is pretty soft wrapping light.

The LEDs ar betwen Flourescent and a fresnel.

They got a better throw as a caselight but also makes a bright spot (at a wall) and a verry wide soft rimm. That can be modified with gels and barndoors.

Yes, you can't really compare a flo to a tungsten fresnel or to LEDs for that matter. When people say its equivalent to something in tungsten you hope they mean a tungsten softbox because that is the more direct comparison. When comparing LEDs to tungsten perhaps it could be a direct comparison because the light is somewhat hard in nature.
