Flip Option Helps with HMC150???

I just found out that the HMC has a rotate/flip option on the LCD to help with the 35mm adapter... I guess my question is how many of you guys are using the LCD only? I assume it is not big enough for crucial focus but curious if you guys are having luck just flipping the image in the LCD and not going with an external monitor (simply bc that saves me a ton of money)!

The expanded focus works with the lcd flip on as well as the wfm so i guess you might be able to get away with it, just...

The camera lcd works fine up until you need to go hand held or need to track something. Then you might need a monitor (In my experience). I know with my HVX and blade I can't go hand held with out a monitor becuase my focus puller and I can't see the small HVX monitor and looking at it form the side doesn't help either.

With a person opperating the camera and an AC pulling focus it might get a little clustered, which is why I have a monitor on my Z grips. Might want to consider getting a whip might help get some distance between the puller and operator.

I wouldn't buy one unless you really really need one, because that usually means you need to buy batteries and support for the monitor. Just my 2 cents. I hope I didn't confuse you.

Yes use the expand focus it helps alot!

well bc it is a small crew, my DP will also be his own puller...lol
so if you think he can handle it by looking at the LCD then i will do that. for $200 it is probably worth buying the monitor but at this point every penny saved is a penny... well ya know...
www.handy35.com has their monitor for $200- just seems unreal of a price!

I'm trying to figure out what I should get first. an SGblade or a Monitor. How IMPOSSIBLE is it to focus with the SGblade on the cameras LCD.
What do you guys reccomend I purchase first?

Not so unreal when you consider that the resolution is 480 x 240. The onboard camera probably packs more pixel than that. Forget about pulling focus on something like that, it's for framing and image flip only.

An HD monitor is very useful in many ways. The ability to get spot on focus saves you time on set. The director can watch the take without crowding the DP. You can definitely get by with the onboard (I did for two years) but it's always going to be a struggle to get the sharpest footage possible.

thanks huy vu... did not realize it was that bad of resolution... is that on their site... how did i miss that?

Check out this monitor. It's a decent price and is HD. It has worked very well for me. I tried for a time to use the LCD on an A1 to pull critical foculs. As Huy said, it was a challenge. Shots I thought were in focus on the LCD were soft when I viewed the footage in the NLE later. Since I got the monitor, every shot has been spot on sharp.

This one is $100 less but doesn't have 1:1 pixel mapping (which you may not need). Same resolution, though.

I was reading what I wrote earlier, I realized I was trying to save you some $$$ but looking over it I would change it to say get both a monitor and the blade at the same time. My eye sight is so bad that I need a external monitor to see what's going on and Huy Vu has some good points, which I learned the hard way on set. Also get a HD monitor with good resolution, my friends used crap monitors in the past and since those monitors weren't that sharp and neither was their image.

It not impossible to pull focus on the onboard LCD but its a huge pain in the ass and you will be wondering if your was sharp. I don't recommend it, I did that for one short and orded my Marshall monitor the next day.
