flicker boxes?

Has anyone actually used a flicker box? I'm wanting to get one with a 2k capacity but there are a ton of different types, I'd love to hear from anyone who's actually used them and how good they are.
 
They're great for fire effect, thats where I've used them. The better ones have control over all aspects, the amount of dimming the frequency and even random modes. I shot an outdoor campfire recently, the fire was fake logs with a propane fire ring. Then opposite of the fire I had 6 2k zips gelled with different straws and CTO. I had two controllers with three lights on each, which I set up on different patterns for each light. I had really nice flickering effects on the faces.
 
do you guys own your own flicker boxes or rent them? anyone got links to online stores that might sell them?
 
For cheap,cheap.. people use to use bike tires, and clip/tape gel onto the spokes. spin the wheel in front of a light source, and "Waaa-laa". Add a dimmer and your set.
 
You could program something easily with a dmx 512 controller and dimmer box. These can be rented from your local sound and lighting companies.
