Flash?

The last time I needed flash for a website, I had to hire out. This time I was thinking of doing it myself.

There are only a few challenges:

1) I don't have flash

2) I don't know how to use flash

3) I don't know if I can buy flash as a stand alone app

4) I don't know how well flash works with iWeb

I just want to be able to do simple things, and I am confident I can learn that. I've taught myself everything I know about the entire Final Cut suite, and figured out how to design, upload and maintain our website.

If nothing else, maybe I can design an avatar as cool as horsefilms

Any thoughts, input, rebukes, and insults are welcome.

Jim there is a little app out there that lsts you embed flash into Iweb and I believe its called Iweb Enhancer. Also you can just Google for scripts to embed things into Iweb and find them quite easy. Flash and WMV and other things can be embedded.

Good Luck

Well that's good news. Thanks.

I'm still a little confused about buying Flash. I can only find it as part of CS4. Is that the only way it comes, or can I get it as a stand alone app? Or is that not a good idea?

There it is as standalone. Really expensive way to buy it though IMO. No need for any other apps to use it although having Photoshop and Dreamweaver make building a full page easy. Dont know iWeb at all so not sure how it works with that. Learning Flash is a bit of a pain. I've been using it off and on for a couple of years and still dont know it inside and out although I manage to get by for the most part. It helps to have a good background in programming. I started with Adobe's Classroom in a book for Flash and it was a good primer to get used to everything.

Thanks. I already have both Dreamweaver (which I gave up on and switched to iWeb) and PS. But that is a little pricier than I expected.

Are there alternatives for simple motion graphics for the web?

To make motion graphics for the web (that is not video) is never "simple."

I am a web and Flash designer by trade and I have to let you in on the secret: Flash is complicated, end of story.

Sorry to say. If you are looking to do it yourself, you have two options. Take a few months to learn Flash at all, and maybe a year or more to master it to the point of mere competency, or just forget Flash.

Flash for web design is overrated anyway, and people are expecting to see Flash animation for simple webpages less and less on the web. If you ever want to add images, links, or update your website in any other way (via a blog for example), you're better off leaving Flash alone.

Flash has really emerged as a programming and applications tool, rather than a web design tool over the past few years, especially as languages like php and database-driven content management systems have really done web *content* right.

But Flash is still cool, and if you want to make some animated logos and stuff (not build a website), it's still a neat tool, but again, people are no longer impressed by a flashy (excuse the pun) rotating logo, and the return on investment (in time and money) is not very high unless you are going to do some deep actionscripting and application development.

Jim, have you tried doing your titles in motion and then doing a flash conversion? Will dig up that converter I found.

Thanks for the tip. I have no intention or desire to master another app.

No, I didn't know it could do a flash conversion. I'd appreciate that converter if you get the chance.
