Flash based mp3 recorders instead of wireless mics?

I'm looking for a sound solution for a documentary I'm shooting next week.

I was excited to read in Inside Film that Rolf de Heer successfully used cheap modified mp3 flash recorders hidden in performer's hair or accessories to capture dialogue whilst shooting Ten Canoes. MSI Megastick 256 flash drive mp3 recorders were used (at only $250 each in 2005) and could run for 9 hours on a single AAA battery. This would seem like much longer running time and much cheaper than using lapel mics. Flash drives are much smaller than wireless transmitters too so easier to hide. I'm not sure what electronic modifications were made to the mp3 flash drive sound recorders though.

Does anyone know of an off the shelf flash drive recorder that will get good results with a lapel mic? I would like to use one on each of the two performers I'm shooting next week.
