Flash animation into Premiere (PAR)

Here I am again with pixel aspect ratio-related problems...

This is my new predicament : I shoot my movie in squeeze mode with the DVX in order to achieve final output to DVD in 16:9. The thing is, I'll need to include in that movie an animation made with Macromedia Flash.

Now, because Flash is not a video program, the animations it creates have square pixels. Furthermore, since Premiere Pro does not accept Flash documents as source input, I'll have to export the animation out of Flash in .mov format, then import that into Premiere.

So, my question is, Do I need to adjust the dimensions of the animation in Flash *before* I start creating the animation ? In other words, make the animation 1024 x 576 (I'm in PAL-land) ?

Or should I not worry, work on a 720 x 576 animation and change the pixel ratio later, in PPro, with Interpret Footage ? I fear that, if I do this, it will not look right.

Any help or tip as to how to proceed as safely as possible will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance !

do a small test before proceeding with the real thing.
you will want to do the flash movie either in 720*576 or 768*576 (25fps). just test it and see which looks better. also antialiasing of the flash movie will be necessary, either on the flash side or PPro side (or both depending on the movie)

Hi Andrea,

That's what I did first : my Flash document was 720 x 576, but when I exported it in QuickTime format, it looked all elongated (stretched width-wise) in the QuickTime player, and it retained its unfortunate characteristics thereafter in PPro and in the Preview from Encore, which I believe to be quite accurate as to what will happen when a DVD will be viewed on a TV screen.

720 x 576 does not seem to be the way to go.

I did a quick test based on a 1024 x 576 Flash animation, which exported fine in QT. I'll do further tests later and will let you know.

im sorry i didnt notice you project is 16:9. ignore what i wrote before.

as you said,
seems like 1024*576 is the way to go then... or 720*576 and then do the interpret footage (as anamorphic 16:9). but in the second case you will have to produce an anamorphic footage with flash, which could be kind of complicated.

i would go for the 1024, a one (or more) antialiasing filters and i'm sure it should be ok. avoid very thin lines.

try .swf :) it has never worked for me, although I handle Flash very well. I always get a problem with that.

Yep, works fine.

1024 x 576 is the way to go for 16:9, PAL projects when you need to incorporate full-screen still or animated images, including Flash animations via QuickTime export.

Thanks !
