I've just read that Macromedia Flash 8 video will use the On2 VP6.2 codec. While I'm disappointed that Flash 8 won't use the VP7 codec, I'm excited that Macromedia/Adobe have chosen the VP codec. I have been hoping for a combination like this for some time and have been following On2's VP codec progress ever since I was introduced to the VP3 codec by ShoutcastTV. VP7 looks like the best codec currently available for everyday use, and VP6.2 isn't that far behind. Combine the VP6.2 codec with Flash - the most widespread web plugin available - and you've got an almost perfect combination for web video. Flash 8 should be released next month. Here's a comparison of the new flash video codec vs the old flash video codec:
There's also a Flash 8 video Q&A on FlashMagazine.com. You can view VP6/7 video samples, including a full-length movie, on the On2 web site.
