Flags and Scrims

What size flags and scrims do you guys usually use? I know it's a broad question and that the size would be dictated by the situation, but is there generally one size or possibly two that you find yourself using more than others (ie. 18" x 24" / 24" x 36" ) ? By the way the lights I'm going to be flagging/scrimming are a 1K mole fresnel and a 650w ARRI fresnel. I will be buying a 4x4 frame for each soon though.

Also, I want to buy a few scrims, any recommendations on a Single vs. Double net? Single scrims look like the amount of light they would cut is pretty minuscule. Most of the lighting setups I've seen use a lot of doubles. What do you find yourselves using more?

any help appreciated.

24x36" is the most common, but with you size of your lights you could go with the smaller one. You should have a few "sandwiches" of flags

I use singles and doubles all the time, depending on how much light I need to use, you should have 1 for each light. Also, get some half scrims, they incredibly useful.

24x36 is standard.

A single cuts light by 1/2 stop, a double cuts light by 1 stop.

When on set, it's customary to bring both when a net is called for.
You can use one or the other, it's just more subtle to use the single.

On small shoots without a proper grip truck, I like to get a set of singles, doubles and silks and "sandwich" them with flags to help protect them in transport.

I don't know...I think it's more the grippage that comes with the light that dictates the flag that you would use. Since he's going to have a few 4x4 diffusion frames, I'd go with some 2x3 flags, just because the 18x24's will only be able to cover up one half of one side of the frame.

I think you're right on the mark though with singles and doubles though. I rarely find myself using a single...if anything it's usually a flag because the light is so diffused that you really need the solid to get a good cut going.
