Fixing Soft Focus in Post!!

Hey Guys,

I've got a slight problem that I'm hoping someone can offer some advice. I just shot an industrial for a client on my DVX100. I decided to try the Red Rock M2 attachment with Nikkor lenses, which I hadn't used before.

Now that I'm finished and can blow up the footage to see it, I'm noticing on many takes, my focus was soft. I can't go back and reshoot the footage. Is there anything I can do in post to sharpen that up??

If anyone has any helpful ideas I would greatly appreciate it!! I don't know if theres a plug-in that might help or something I'm not doing.

Cheers,

David

Try neatvideo (an after effects plug in) - if you precede that in your effects stack with after effects sharpening (no more than 20%) it will really toughen up footage. Use after effects sharpen first (which will introduce video artifacts and then neatvideo to clean it up (you'll need to read the neatvideo documentation as it's not simply plug n play (to find optimal settings) - it really is an amazing piece of software

Hey James, thanks for the tip. Is neat video available for Mac? I've looked but haven't been able to find it. I've tried the sharpen feature of FCP but your right anything 15 and over starts to really look played with. I'm also trying to keep the high contrast look down, (which seems to go through the roof with sharpen)

Thanks for the tips though. If not neatvideo for Mac, does Mac have something similar?

Really depends on how out of focus. VFX companies can do a surprisingly good job sharpening footage to a certain degree, though it can cost a fortune in all likelihood a lot more than your shoot did. But at a certain point there's nothing you can do be reshoot. Perhaps you could post a still of one of the worse ones?
