Fixing Grainy Footage?

In one scene of the film I'm editing, the close-ups of one of the actors is somewhat grainy. I attribute this to the cameraman not properly focusing the camera on the subject. Is there any way (through Vegas) I can make the shot appear less grainy?

Much thanks!

You can attempt a blur, but Vegas doesn't really have a noise removal tool. Brightening it some and lowering the contrast will help a little, but you can't do too much of that without highly affecting the rest of the shot.

It's not the focus which causes the noise; it's lack of light. The noise would be there either way.

Much thanks. The close-up debacle has totally killed me. It would be nice if I could cut that character's close-ups (I tried, and it didn't look right). I will try the contrast. Much thanks!

This is speculation, but prosumer cameras have F values which raise towards the long end of the lens .. what that means is, the further in you 'zoom', the darker the picture gets. You compensate either by keeping away from the widest apertures (if you have light to spare, i.e. controlled circumstances), or by boosting gain or shifting shutter-rate (far from ideal, shouldn't happen in a controlled environment). Boosting gain = boosting GRAIN, sounds like what might have happened in your case. Nothing the camera person could have done (unless they were DOP / lighting cameraman, in which case it should never have been allowed to happen).

-edit- forgot to state the obvious, moving the camera closer to the subject (rather than zooming in) would've been the right thing to do ... got carried away talking about "non-ideal" situations, as we all have to face them at some point :)
