Fixing chroma sampling problems

A lot of my DVX footage that has bright red colors looks very rough on the edges, vertical lines and such. I have tried using Color Smooting in FCP and I've tried using Deartifactor from Key Correct Pro. When I lay the filter onto the clip, the problem appears to be fixed, but once I render, it goes back to looking like crap.

Solutions?

...are you rendering it in a DV/NTSC timeline? that'll make it 4:1:1 again. you have to do it in an uncompressed timeline.

check your sequence settings... under codec it is most likely DV/NTSC (because that is what you shot). The DV/NTSC sequence is good for giving you real-time playback of your DV footage. However, it renders everything in the timeline to the DV codec. So while you applied the chroma smoothing to fix an artifact from the DV codec, you see it after the render because it goes right back to 4:1:1 color sampling (DV).

what you need to do is stay in the DV/NTSC sequence while editing. when you are ready to add the chroma smoothing, you need to change the sequence codec to uncompressed SD. this way when you render the filter, it won't go back to DV compression.

if you don't know where to find the sequence settings, crack open the manual.
