Fixing an overblown background

I'm using FCPX to put together footage for a local public service video. It will be under 4 minutes. It entails a presenter and quite a few cut-aways. The presenter is on-screen for a total of less than 2 minutes, all in short clips of 5 to 15 seconds.

The problem is that the background was overlit. Here's a still of the presenter (whose face has been obscured).

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to darken the background.

Thanks in advance.

Simple color correction. A simple contrast adjustment via the "Exposure" (incorrectly titled) controls in FCP X's built-in color corrector. I doubt you'd have to, but you could also use the built-in shape mask. Don't make it more complicated than it is. Not a huge issue to fix.
