Fixes a 'BUZZ'

Wondering if anyone can give some advice here. Have some buzz in a clip (not so noticeable when my actor is talking but very when he is not). Here is the clip link on youtube...

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what audio filters in FCP or soundtrack pro would get rid of or at least minimize this? And please be as specific as you can.

I have tried doing the old 'manual noise gate' (though the clip I have up is totally un-effected) where I silence the clips when he isn't talking - but I cans till hear the buzz when he is talking (when the gate is open)

Thanks,

Mick

Try a notch filter EQ. Narrow the filter as much as you can, dump the gain as far as it will go, and dial around until it goes away. If it doesn’t go away completely, widen the filter a little.

If you don’t have a notch filter EQ, use a single band parametric EQ the same way.

The thing is, you may need to use the notch filter on his entire dialog to make it sound even. Maybe not. It can’t hurt to try.

Hope that helps.

You may find it easier to find the appropriate notching frequency if you initially boost the gain, sweeping the frequency until the buzz is at its loudest. Once you find that point, simply turn the gain down until the buzz is dealt with.

The same trick is quite helpful in dealing with sibilance and other frequency-specific issues.

You know, thinking about it, using a de-esser might work on the buzz problem.

I wonder how a de-esser might work to remove buzz? It might work better for smoothing out intermittent noise.

I’ll have to try it next time I get a chance.

A de-esser is basically just a compressor with a eq sidechain input. If the noise is constant volume, the de-esser won't really grab anything. If the noise is something that pops out then a de-esser would work. If you are talking about a typical 60hz hum, eq is probably the most effective.
