fish-eye adapter

I'm going to be renting a fish-eye adapter for my DVX100A this weekend. The girl at the rental place explained to me on the phone that it is not lens but an ADAPTER. Can someone clarify for me the difference? And are there any considerations I need to keep in mind for shooting with the adapter? Any pieces I need to attach it to my regular ol' DVX100A?

Thanks!

Dear sean:

If the accessory is truly designed for use on the DVX100 it will either have a 72mm thread and mount by screwing into the front, or mount via a bayonet lock ring using the bayonet ears on the front of the lens where the factory sunshade attaches.

The convention we follow is that an adapter is a supplimental lens, generally one or two elements that will produce a wide angle or fisheye field of view when added to an existing lens. The lens must have either a macro-focus function or focus to with-in a few inches of the front element to bring the wide/fisheye field of view into sharp focus. They are only useable at the wide end of the lens.

Wide converters generally have more elements (2-4) and are larger, heavier and not as wide, but maintain normal focus (infinity is still infinity)and allow you to use the zoom lenses full range.

A true fisheye lens would be a stand alone lens that replaced the camera zoom and mounted directly onto the camera.

In everyday use the terms are not always used correctly resulting in some confusion.

First off, sorry to sort of hijack this thread, but I have a question.

I have a collinscraft red eye .5x, and it produces minor barrell distortion, but I have been looking at getting a century fisheye. I am wondering if the regular century fisheye will yield a more pronounced fisheye effect than my .5x wide angle?

While I would expect noticeably more barrel, the fact is whether or not it would be enough to in your mind justify the additional purchase I have no way of knowing. I have never tested the Red Eye. I would suggest buying the unit from a reputeable dealer with a clear return policy that would allow you to test it and return it for a full refund if for any reason you were not satisfied with the results.

We sell direct for the convenience of some customers, but do not discount from list. We do have a 30 day money back guarantee as long as the item is returned in new condition.

From your handle I imagine you have a DVX100/100A, perhaps someone one reading this who has the fisheye could send you or post a frame grab for you to compare to what you get with your existing adapter.

Good Luck

Maybe you could tell me how much barrel distortion there is in relation to the .3x ultra fisheye? I borrowed one from my school and I really enjoyed using it, and would buy one except for the obvious price difference between it and the lesser fisheye. I have a clear knowledge of what the .3x is like, how much "less" distortion is there with the other fisheye? I know this is doesn't really have a clear cut answer, but maybe I could get an idea?
