first Letus extreme footage

Pretty charming, both image and music.
It's a bit too much compressed but picture quality seems very sharp. I love that fast motion with the man standing there for a frame at 3:06.
Maybe there's a bit of ghosting in the bokeh highlights at 2:53 although I think it could be overrided by stopping down a bit, doesn't it?

Looking forward to receiving it and doing some tests...

Thanks for sharing and regards.

p.s. music?

hi phlip, lookks pretty good, but the ghosting looked kind of severe on some parts.but for the parts where it looked like your lens was stopped down the shrpness and detaile were unbelievable.now in you oppinion from judgeing on you monitor, how would you rate the image quality to that of your other adapters like the brevis and the m2?thanks.

Phil,

Really beautiful cinematography and the soundtrack was so perfect. The evening/night shots were really pretty and the day shots with the people had a great atmosphere to it. Where was this shot?

I watched the Bourne Supremacy last night and saw all kinds of bokeh in sequences where there were many lenses used. Some had an octagonal rendering of highlights, some round, and yes, some diffused and ghost-like. I noticed some of the latter in your footage but who cares? It looks beautiful and it's only us stick-in-the-muds that are going to notice it anyway.

An artful piece. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Phil:

Beautiful. I was in Scotland and North of England two months ago, this brings back memories.

Looks great.

Awesome color. I totally don't mind the "diffused, ghost-like" bokeh that many do seem to mind.

Tricky...

The thing I loved best was its pretty hard to mess up the settings. Once you are focused on the screen it seems you can knock the zoom as much as you want and unlike the brevis and m2 it doesn't knock it out of focus. A nice touch.

Very impressed with the image. Watched it on my 46" Samsung TV and was blown away by the sharpness.

Yes the Bokeh in places isn't quite how I like it, but for all the other plusses I give the adaptor a massive thumbs up!

The music is from "The Village" by James Newton Howard

The footage is absolutely beautiful Philip.
I would be interested in knowing what the ghosting was from.

Off hand, the adapter is the last place I would imagine as it is clearly a motion artifact either brought in from some combination of shutter speed and camera speed or more likely post or compression processing. That's my guess anyway. If it comes from the adapter it would be a serious problem though.

It is a pretty effect though.

What do you mean it is hard to knock it out of focus even if you knock the zoom?

What did you find lacking in the bokeh? This stuff looks great.

Lenny, this subject has been much discussed in this forum, I'm surprised you haven't seen it...take a look at the threads that have "bokeh" in the title for more discussions.

When you say ghosting are you talking about some of the bokeh has double edges...especially on the highlights? There may also maybe some reflective ghosting on some of the shots as I had a Matte Box on with two different ND grads, .6 and .9 for most of the shots. When I was pointing at the sky, as would be expected, I was getting some reflective bounce between the lens and the filter.

I really am impressed by the quality of the image out of the Letus, especially after my first 35mm was the Letus FE which i HATED, terrible image and needed so much light it would only work for 3 days a year in England when the sun came out!

I am a massive Brevis fan, but I am seriously going to start using my Letus Extreme for paying jobs now. I feel pretty happy with it now I have used it in various light conditions. The nightime stuff had 6db of gain in and yet it still looked fab.

When I use my Brevis, the achromat on the lens means the the focus and zoom have to be spot on to maintain edge to edge sharpness. With the Letus it seems it doesn't matter so much. Once you set it up and keep note of the focus marking and rough zoom mark you are pretty much there. A world away from my nightmares trying to get edge to edge sharpness with the Redrock (never happened, despite Redrock incredibly kindly sending me a whole new M2 and hard mount kit for free)

Yeah, I was talking about double edges. They're visible on some shots, but honestly, I'm not worried about it.
I'll test it this week with my hv20 and post samples. This little camera hasn't zoom or focus marks (it's maintained while battery isn't empty) so it won't be so easy to setup, but I'll get used.
What was your f-stop in camera? do you keep it always the same at, don't know, f2.8 or something like that?

Regards

From my own experience Jshooter, I am constantly changing the f-stop of the actual camera. Remember, you are limited to working with just a couple of stops on the attached lens because when you open up beyond f4, you are dealing with seeing the ground glass pattern.

So exposure is primarily controlled by in-camera iris settings/in-camera ND filters/external filters...

Thanks Disjecta, NDs and FF are my next goals. HV20 has internal NDs but you can't use them when you want, it's all damn automatic, so I was looking at some Cavision 4x4 ones.
Can't wait for Fedex knocking at my door.

Regards

Nice footage, Philip! This is exactly why I didn't post my bland boring stuff. LoL.

You're right about the zoom. I can jump from different feet and really never have a problem with the focus on the Letus where-as, with the M2, There was noway I could do that.

Great footage!!! The night shots were very impressive and the atmosphere is so European romanesque ... The soundtrack is off the hook. I was just going to inquire about it and I'm glad Philip talked about it here.

Great footage Philip. I this adapter is amazing (I was order #2). I have a big shoot coming up next week (and I'll try to post footage as well).
