First footage from the RED DRAGON released

It's amazing! Especially at 17:1. Note that he states that this film is minimal corrections. Just curves and such. I have not been the biggest of RED fans, but this camera is just looking too nice. Wanna FU-Ck with the world Jim? Offer it at $25,000 so we all have a shot at having it...I tip my hat to RED on this camera. Good going guys! You job is done and you can now stop chasing film. There is no reason to go any higher than this cameras offerings.

I have a feeling that the Epic-X Dragon will be around the $25K mark (with SSD and mount). The Epic-M Dragon is about $32K (SSD/mount) but is an early adopter/hand made price (and for people to jump the queue and buy one quickly rather than wait for an upgrade etc).

So, when the X version is available 'in-store' I think it'll be in that mid 20's mark - and that'll be a pretty good deal.

Agree with you regarding the 17:1 - it looks as good as current 6:1/5:1 at the moment.

The Dragon might well turn a few heads, it seems!

Looks amazing! I've always liked the look of Red footage but the DR here is just jaw dropping, and the high ISO footage looks great. Lighting for this camera will be so much fun because you can do so much with just a few lights and still get amazing shots. Don't know about the workflow, price, etc., but the footage so far looks fantastic.

As an Epic owner i never gave rip about 6k.

The things i always care about most were dynamic range and skin tones.

This hits all of my buttons.

Dragon preordered.

Money in my RED account. Just waiting for my number to be called. The best thing about RED your camera should last 2 sensor generations. Feels so good to not have to buy a new camera.

It feels to me like we have really reached a point of diminishing returns with all these cameras. The main difference just seems to be price and usability, and how many accessories you need to buy. The image quality is all essentially the same unless you have really specific specifications for very specific applications.

Not to mention the price range, but things which worry me about a Red camera package is the learning curve for someone like me who is first a writer, director and art director and not someone quite addicted by camera tweaking... Canon Eos C camera have these advantages but i have some trouble with their limitation in dynamic range, video compression and frame rate limitation.
Anyone like me who has follow the Red road care to share his experience please?
I would really appreciate, thanks

Wow, I don't see any noise at 4000 ISO.

High Resolution, High DR, High ISO, High FPS beast!

Wow.. beautiful highlights, beautiful skin tones, crazy great dynamic range. There's no limit to that camera. Man! Those highlights on the surfer walking by and on that silver car are just a tremendous treat. Whew...

Question about the DR: it's supposed to be the greatest improvement with this new sensor, I've seen the step chart test and was very impressed by it... but the light-meter readings in the video/framegrabs seem to indicate that these scenes were not really THAT demanding in this respect. I mean, if the highlight is f/44 and the shadows are f/4, well, that's a difference of 7 stops, so, not really impressive, even a GH2 should be able to cope with that without any issues. What am I missing?

edit: maybe these readings are incident, and then I have to take into account the difference between a light-grey car and a deep black tyre? For this, I would take reflected readings myself...

From the guy who shot it:

"The Red Dragon sensor has 3 F STOPS more than before. 1 in the hight lights which rolls over wonderfully !, 2 solid extra stops in the darks…. maybe 3 once the colour science has been perfected."

Mark only had two days to test Dragon. He managed to squeeze a lot of footage in those days. He's not easy to impress and he's definitely upgrading. I probably will too.

Epic X Dragon is $27 500 in the store. This is not aimed at a low-end market. Rent it if buying is too pricey. There is a place for high end tools and high ends shoots, and a place for high enough budgets to pay for whatever is needed.

Hey Robert. Yes the Epic-X Dragon at the moment will cost you $27K if you have to buy the Epic-X first and pay for the upgrade to Dragon. The price to buy an Epic-X dragon off the shelf hasn't officially been announced yet.

You're right, it hasn't - I didn't see that was $29 000 for the Epic Dragon M . Hopefully they won't burn owner-ops with another cruel price drop. I hope they give us time to get our $9500 re-couped.
