First footage from Spoon

Ari posted as being what actually your product is.

While all we are waiting for the RED, you have a solid product with footage available. About this last one, only tomorrow I will know. But regarding what I could see until now, you have the best deal. Better than any major HD offer available from the big manufacturers.

I knew the russian camera (www.ctt.ru), as matter of fact, I invited Alexander and Levan (L. Bakhia) to help us to understand what they had (Alex as provider, Levan as customer). Unfortunately, Levan posted his briefing, informing us that Alexander didn't had his product ready. Afterwards, Levan bought a XL-H1. And since then, we have been waiting. Until Jim's RED and yourselves.

To have feedback of REAL customers (and not mere advertisement, spamming or propaganda promotion) is very important for some confidence regarding to any new product. Goaling potential customers. Well done. You are really healthy RED competition. Jim must be handle with it and we are grateful to/for both.

That last clip was seriously impressive, would love to see a comparison in the near future with the viper.

This footage looks great. At least in these .WMV 9 files, I see little if any noise in the mids.

I'd love some more notes on how the camera is rated, lens choice, workflow and so forth? The large form-factor and on-chip models are actually available now, right?

Here are some quotes from the Spoon Blog:

"The shoot is going extremely well. Thanks to everyone who has made it so. This format is turning out to be ideal for our comic strip style film. The look is unique falling between film and video. It is soft yet clear - video without the video edging we all hate. The beauty shots are great - the make-up reads better than other hd formats (it's more like film).

We've shot varying conditions. The darker areas are holding up but there is nothing to beat this camera in good light. I will try and give two clips today at least - one with school yard bench scene in strong light and a darker industrial shot.

Despite the fact that these camera heads are prototypes they are working really well. We had some static build up issues (at least i think that's what they were) first when I booted up the second camera head after transportation and again when shooting Daniel's soaked apartment. These sort themselves out when ground is properly done and when the head "settles down".

We've shot close on 40 hours of footage (probably too much but to have the coverage is great). Both close personal performance stuff and a fair bit of action. Both are great. The action stuff has a really unique real feeling while remaing very filmic (not videolike).

We've shot a lot with zooms for efficiency but the fast 16mm primes are the way to go if you have time. Much more light and hence data gets through."

When would you like one (or two)?

If you are still aiming for the rumored price-point, I'd opt into one as soon as a repeatable production model is available.

If you cant wait till September, we MAY have some additional proto units available, similar to what is being used on the Spoon project, with upgrades to final production levels, when available.... :-) !

Hi Ari!!

I am just fall in love with this footage. Until now I was thinking to buy the HVX but... something say me "no". When I see this footage I find why. But for me there is a lot of questions:

1.You say that there is proto units available now. I am interested in the "only head" pack. But I am from Spain. Can I buy it for 12500$ now?

2.I work in Final Cut Pro. When will be your product available to work with it directly (without the need of render from AVI to QUICKTIME; to work with the footage so easily like with Premiere Pro)?

3. Is there any workflow solution or idea to capture the sound at the same time (in the same file that the image) with the "camera head only" package?

4. Any solution idea for batteries?

5. Does it work with a Mac Book Pro 2Ghz. Is that enough to work with the camera now (with Windows XP through Bootcamp) and in the future (with Final Cut Pro... what a dream)?

Thank you very much, Ari, to make us dream, cinematic dreams, affordable dreams...

:)

the last clip was crisp but I don't like the photography... the black is way too gray 4 me...
I've cc one frame just to show you my vision...

Vincent,

Of course all the material is pre-color correction, the flat greyish look is an indicator of the camera's dynamic range.

I have to agree....what is the FCPro workflow?

Yepp it looks greater when you crush the blacks, maybe a little to much (on my monitor)

They should have done the same thing on Colleteral it looked to washed out for my taste.

YES. The only question is the schedule for Software Support on QT workflow!!

2.I work in Final Cut Pro. When will be your product available to work with it directly (without the need of render from AVI to QUICKTIME; to work with the footage so easily like with Premiere Pro)?

The schedule for QT Cineform RAW support is Sept/Oct. You could shoot in .AVI and then go thru a .MOV conversion (when software is ready) which would only change the wrapper and still maintain RAW.

3. Is there any workflow solution or idea to capture the sound at the same time (in the same file that the image) with the "camera head only" package?

Run the Audio to the PC doing the recording. We already support 16bit/48KHz recording in the .AVI. QT should be able to support even higher.

4. Any solution idea for batteries?

Dionic 90 for example. The Mini-Rig (Camera+LCD) should draw less than 20W!

Could be possible. Nothing tested yet.

THANKS! :dankk2:

Here is the statement from David Newman:

We are currently porting the CineForm codec to Quicktime for Mac and PC operations. Initialially the codec will be optimized for the Intel Mac (CineForm component are already heavy optimized for Intel parts) have G5 binaries should be made available for compatibility with old Macs. The camera files can be transfered via EtherNet or the drive directly mounted via USB2. These files will playback within any QuickTime application. The CineForm RAW MOV files will operate within Final Cut Pro just like any other third party codec. You can use your compete post/color work, just the same as if you where using BitJazz or another codec. The workflow is going to be pretty seamless. There are some new features for FCP, such as post-manipulation of the color matrices for the decoded data -- integration into FCP has yet to be determined.
