I did my first firewire capture tonight...all I have to say is WOW.

I know this is old news to you "lifers", but just wow.

I was doing composite RGB at first, but then I did the firewire tonight. The quality difference is just amazing.

I guess seeing is believing. And I loved it how I could control the camera, do shuffling, and things like that from Premiere. And it also seems like there is better file and rendering control after you do a firewire capture within premiere, rather than importing and RGB capture from another program (i had bad luck with capturing via RGB Composite)

I am still cleaning my pants. Yes... I guess you can say my cherry has be popped

I t also seems like it just compresses better to. The transfer I did was over 45 minutes long, and 20 GB's. Even with that...Win. Med. Player loaded it right up. Before... it would take a few minutes just to load a 2GB avi captured from antoher program.

God...I love this industry.

Ok... I'll stop blathering now.

Sounds like premier had dv control enabled... was scene detection enabled? You'll like that - it will create a separate clip of each clip on tape instead of 1 20GB file.

On that note...

Can the DVX100B do direct to disk? I don't rememebr seeing that in the features.

Needless to say, I am never doing composite again.

With a firestore, or nNovia, or by running DV Rack on a computer (or other capture application), yes you can go direct-to-disk.

X - if you are shooting 24P and using PremierePro, here's a couple suggestions.
Shoot 24PA and ALWAYS use scene detect inPPro when capturing.

Just trust me.... then you will not have the "strobing" issue that so many DVX/Premiere users run into.
Search the Premiere forum here and you'll soon understand.....

I have premiere 6.0, but I plan to upgrade to the Adobe pack, or get FCP, Vegas, or Avid.

Strobing as is missed frames? or interlacing jagginess? Hell I'll just looking th Premiere forum as you suggested ;)

I'm really unclear on the exact technical reason for the strobing. It has something to do with capturing the wrong GOP frames or something. All I Know is that if I shoot 24PA and use scene detect to capture, I've never had a strobe problem.
