First Drone Recommendations?

I'm interested in buying my first drone. After watching a lot of footage, it seems like a really handy thing to have for various shots. I'm looking at the DJI Phantom drones because they seems small, priced right and available everywhere. But I don't really know the difference between all the models. What makes the 3 better than the 2 or the 4 better than the 3?

Is it better to go with one of DJIs cameras (2.7 or 4K) or buy just the drone and add a GoPro to it? Are the cameras they sell any good?

I'm a total newbie when it comes to these, so all advice is appreciated.

I'd like to stay cheap, under $1000 if possible. Would prefer to stay closer to half that as I'm more likely to pull the trigger on something new at around $500 versus even $1000.

If you want to go the go pro route a gimbal like the zenmuse as a gimbal is a must for serious done work. The dji line is the best to start with id say

I'd say avoid the using the GoPro on any drone - the fisheye distortion looks horrible for aerial shots.

The cameras on the Phantom 3 series have rectilinear lenses - so you still get a nice wide FOV for those sweeping landscape shots, but you get straight horizons as well.

Sounds like you may have decided so I'll add to it that I also recommend the Phantom 3 professional. The better, faster P4 is out now, but the P3 is still good and a great value since the price has dropped.
