No problem Loki, that's what forum's are all about, different views.
but, a film school setting limits for the types of films deemed appropriate, that's not censorship, that's the cirriculum. If Mike didn't check out the details of what the school teaches or allows, that's not the schools problem, it's Mikes.
Mike paid (well mom and dad) to be taught.....not to teach.
Maybe he should have done his homework by looking into the school before spending the folks cash.
I've worked on 73 films, and 7 TV series, plus a multitude of short shoots, were they all what "I" wanted to shoot, hell no!
I agree Pookie in that I didn't do my research and that that is my fault about that. When I wrote the post I was still shocked and therefore annoyed about that.
I wasn't saying that I think there's no rules, I thought it wouldn't be as restrictive as my Christian Highschool but it's more restrictive (I agree I should have researched). Also, I'm not saying I want to set the rules, what I meant was I'd just approach them about it, should have made that a bit clearer, realize now it seemed abit "I'm calling the shots to them", that's not the case.
It's not that I can't accomplish a "G", it's just that I was surprised about the(because the reason at highschool we could only do PG was because of younger students, which is why I said the 18 line. you weren't to know that though) fact that it was more restricted and didn't think that made sense.
Pookie, I respect you for being a professional in the industry, don't get me wrong, and I don't want to get off on the wrong foot with you. Although I do wish you hadn't put it as abruptly and I thought rudely ('another "I know everything" child. I feel sorry for your parents', that was pretty uncalled for) as you did, although I realize that's how it's like in the industry.
No hard feelings? ;D
I will close by saying this again: I started this thread when I was heated and since then have cooled off and realized that it's not that a big deal. I AM mature enough to deal with it and I will.
Hang in there, Mike. You're young and gung-ho, and I respect your enthusiasm.
Thanks very much Frizzle Fry. I actually felt down after getting owned by Pookie. I thought one thing I should also mention is that the school is awesome and I really do want to go (I realized it seemed like I didn't have anything good to say about it). I will learn so much from them and their support, like I do from the majority of the members on this board.
I'll repeat myself because I want the thread to end here because I've said all that needs to be said:
I was angry at the time I started the thread because I was shocked and regret it now, but I don't care at all now and am ready to learn whatever they want to teach me. I will have more spare time to learn what I want outside of school anyway and I'm sure they will answer my questions if I ask for their help (they'll just expect me to hand in things to their standard of classification). At the end of the day, I just want to learn how to be a better filmmaker and as Dolly Parton (and David Brent said): "If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain"
..and people say she's just a pair of big tits! ;D (that was from The Office by the way)
EDIT: I will also add, if one of the moderators could lock this thread now, that would be great
Mike, no problem, I'm sure you'll learn a tremendous amount at the school.
You just need to understand, getting a job in the industry is always about making compromises.
Being limited in the types of films you can produce in school is a very good learning tool, and, being "forced" into a "G" film will teach you far more than being able to produce anything you want. It'll make you force yourself to think, how can I make my "asian extreme cinema and gorey movies" into a "G" film.
As far as my comment "another "I know everything" child. I feel sorry for your parents", I wish my parent could have afforded to send me to film school.
Now, wanting the moderators to lock this thread...hmm...you posted here, take the answers, even if you don't like some, and don't cry to the "teacher (or moderator)".
You consider yourself an adult now, so fight your own fights.
I never went to a real film school like USC or UCLA. I had to learn the hard way. I asked DPs if I could work for free on each of their movies and they let me. Been doing it since 98 (I had to even pay for my own food, I was too afraid to ask craft services). But I learned a ton of stuff on those sets. Now I'm actually getting paid...
"Censorship" it feels like; but as I stated above "..it is the institutions right to make thes restrictions...". My underlying point is "Should have known about this going into the program."
Thanks pookie, the reason I asked for the thread to be locked wasn't because of responses, it was because since I posted I had changed my mind and there was no need to have the thread continue.
It might seem it, but my family isn't rich, nor very well off. My parents just make sacrifices so my brother and I can have good educations (in fact I am going to filmschool part-time because it's far too expensive for me to do it full time). Now I should say straight away that that's not saying your parents didn't do that for you pookie, not saying that at all. I was just thinking that that might have been what it seemed like and wanted to clear it up.
On another note, I don't appreciate your jabs about me "crying to the teacher" and fighting my own fights, when that's not even the case.
