So guys, I'm looking for a car that runs good in the 1,000 to 2,000 price range. But uhm. i know thats HARD to find. Like a needle in a haystack. Can anyone suggest a good car? I know absolutley zip about cars.

but I'm looking for a FIRST car! Go ahead and tell me about your experiences. Im interested in hearing.

...

funny how I have to spend less on a car than my camera.

Ahhh yes, my first car... I felt like such a weenie driving it around.

Honda Accord /Civic's run great. My first car was a honda civic and my second car was an accord. Obviously if you pick a car that old there will be some minor problems that go wrong that after 15 years you would expect to replace but I haven't had a single major problem with my car yet.

Listen to SilverWolf. You cannot go wrong with a Honda. I wouldn't even suggest looking elsewhere. Just go to autotrader.com. Look up cars in your area and find a good deal on a used Honda. Preferably from someone who was the only owner.
Usually, you can tell a lot about the car by the person selling it.

My second car was a Honda Accord. I LOVED that thing. Ran great. Great on gas! At any rate, I bought it from a guy who happened to be a fireman. Those guys seem to take good care of their machinery...washing his truck and car every single week, always changing the oil. I was sold. And never had a single problem with it. Ummm, until the deer ran out and sideswiped me at 4 in the morning...

ahaha. I actually really like the body styles on honda's...

they're actually the #1 stolen car in my area too!

As an owner of various Honda's over the years, I have to echo the sentiments so far. To buy a vehicle for as cheap as $1-2K you are looking at an older vehicle with a lot of miles on it. Honda's seem to do very well over a long period of time. My first car was a Honda CVCC with over 150K miles and other than the occasional backfire it ran great.

I have since owned several Honda's and, whether new or used, I have never been disappointed.

LOL. When I was a kid they toured that car around. Would stop in various towns and If I remember correctly we even got to take a ride in it.

As others are saying (and being pro-American this really pains me) but the Honda's will take a good beating and keep on clunking.

But on a serious note--

1992-1995 Honda Civic Coupe with about 120,000+ miles will cost you about 1500 if you keep looking.

Most reliable vehicle you'll ever have.

Can't go wrong with a honda! I currently own a Civic HB and a Prelude. Make sure the one you buy hasn't been raced out by the owner or previous owners. Owning a previously raced out honda can be a money pit!

We have charity auctions here, you bring a mechanic the day before the auction to check out the cars you're interested in bidding on. Friend of mine got a 1986 Cadilac for 750 dollars (in really good condition...you know everything worked... with 100,000 miles) and sold it to another person for 1600. so he doubled his money. I was thinking about buying a car than turning around and selling it.

I'd recommend an old nissan. One with the sr20 motor in it (sentra se-r, or whatever). It won't matter what the milage is as long as the original owner took care of it. Try not to get one with more than 180k. But, you won't find a used honda that cheap very easily. if it is, it'll probably be a fixer-upper. sr20 motors are bullet-proof - thats why they don't make them anymore because no one will have a need to buy a new car. Check out www.sr20forum.com .

I have a theory that newer cars are built cheaper to keep the price at a medium (for less expensive cars) - since the prices of raw materials are now more expensive than they were 10 or 20 years ago car companies will often cut corners to not pass the cost off to the consumer. Thats why car prices are pretty much always the same.

i'd say get a truck. my dad put about 300K miles on a 1988 ford f250. then you can haul stuff, too.

as long as you get something that's been kept up well, anyway....
