Nice, Bill. I should try a few b&w too, looks like you can get some great results that way too. I dig it!

Alveraz... those kick ass! Very nice! Tripod, f8, and 1/4 - 1/2 sec? Or full second and f11... roughly?

I really like the perfect starbursts on the hanging lights... you have a beautiful environment to frame the fireworks... I'm curious if the starbursts were a happy accident, related to a particular lens (anybody ever notice how nice the starbursts are on a DVX?)...

Thanks! I had just bought a new Tamron 17-50mm so I was looking forward to trying it out. I shot these at about f11 8sec with a tri-pod. I wanted to grab the folks in the boats below as much as possible so I went with a real slow shutter speed. I didn't want straight firework shots, I wanted the whole atmosphere if possible.

Yeah, the lights were a happy accident. In fact I was worried they'd be a big problem and turned out to be quite nice. One note, these were the best fireworks I've ever seen in over 30 years, so I had a brilliant subject, they were immense and I've never seen anything quite like it, so all I did was point and shoot.

By the way, I started with settings suggested by DivotDan in his blog, then tweaked from there.

These are straight from my D50, converted from RAW to JPEG and posted - nothing done whatsoever, except resizing - no cropping either

Im a pro pyro guy at the weekends, and a few years ago at a show I managed to take this:

shellflight.jpg

Thats the shell leaving the tube at 200ish MPH. This was taken at a big outdoor concert, and we fire a few shells off at about 6pm before it gets dark. Seems a bit odd, but its a good time to get pics like this.

I took it with a sony Z1 on 1/10,000th sec shutter with a lot of gain.
