Firewire Transfer Device

Does anyone know if I am likely to lose quality if i get a 300 or 400 dollar Panasonic consumer grade camera to make my transfers with and do my rewinding to save my DVX's motors ? The batteries are the same on them, which is a bonus, an extra battery back-up, and it seems that the CCD and processor of the original would determine quality, but on the other hand I've watched some great dvds on some horrible 30 dollar dvd players and I think I could tell the difference. If that's a horrible idea, what would be the best cheap way to go, seeing how this camera already cost 6 times as much as my last car. Yes, my last car was 500 bucks. Thank you for your time guys.

I didn't know the smaller panni's use the same batterys, if so then i'd be on the market for one of the 300-400 dollar ones to take on the road and for transfers, any specific models your looking at?

I'm looking at the PV-GS19 or the PV-GS35 at the moment, mainly cause we sell them at my work and i can get a discount, most likely the PV-GS19, but I've heard of some timestamp troubles with it. Other than finding out whether that's true or not I think I gathered enough info from posts on here already to answer my question. After, of course, new to this site I blurted out the first thing that came to my mind like a four year old... Yes, the batteries on almost all Panasonic models out right now are interchangable.

Thanks Dan, I'll add that to my short list of choices.

Coulda sworn the free battery they let me have at work was the GS12... oh well, I don't need too many 45 minute at best batteries around.

Thanks Barry Green

Great Book, By the way

Looked it up and the GS16 and GS19 both match the dvx100a, the gs150, gs250, gs31, gs35, gs65, don't apparently. I'm not sure on the other models that don't. For those of you who want to get one to use as a deck and would like the extra battery, here's a list of the cameras that use the same type of battery as listed by batterycarts.com... hitachi first, then panasonic

Hitachi DZ-MV100, DZ-MV100A, DZ-MV100E, DZ-MV200, DZ-MV200A, DZ-MV200E, DZ-MV208, DZ-MV208E, DZ-MV230, DZ-MV230A, DZ-MV230E, DZ-MV270, DZ-MV270A, DZ-MV270E

Panasonic PV-GS16, PV-GS19, AG-DVC15, AG-DVC7, AG-DVX100, AG-DVX100a, DVX100, NV-C7, NV-DA1EG, NV-DS12EG, NV-DS15, NV-DS15B, NV-DS15EG, NV-DS15EN, NV-DS15ENC, NV-DS200, NV-DS25EG, NV-DS27, NV-DS28, NV-DS29, NV-DS29EG, NV-DS30, NV-DS30EG, NV-DS33, NV-DS37, NV-DS38, NV-DS38B, NV-DS38EG, NV-DS60, NV-DS65, NV-DS65B, NV-DS77, NV-DS77EG, NV-DS8, NV-DS88K, NV-DS89

also, i believe the battery my boss already gave to me was from a gs12 like i said before, but don't quote me on that one. All in all it only adds a 30 or 40 dollar value to what you're getting, but it's also a panasonic battery, so it'll last as a back up for a long time... and if you don't get it this way i doubt you go out and buy a 1 hour battery seperate, and it might just save the day some time.

ok so let me get this straight, I can use any of those consumer comcorders as long as they have firewire to transfer my dvx100b footage to my computer without loosing quality, I am going to be shooting 24p AD and 16:9 widescreen, would the cheap camera be able to transfer this without loosing any quality? I will be using vegas to capture, thanks

Quality is not an issue. At least not an issue in the sense you mean. As long as the camera can play the tape without dropping frames (and there's no reason any of them should drop any frames), the trasnfer is 1:1 digital.

Now, I have seen people mention timecode problems, but I don't know if they are real or not. IS timecode liad out on separate "track" on the tape? I didn't think so, but...
