Firewire port - anyone have theirs "blow out&

how many folks on here have had their firewire port fail?

mine did and the tech at the nearest panasonic authorized repair place told me that panasonic is the only brand of camera he has had to repair this on, he said that everyone else he has seen makes the firewire port circuit so it is protected from any voltage spike? from the device at the other end but panasonic does not.

he said you need to only connect it when both the camera and the other end are off.

my camera is in the shop right now and i bought a cable online that is SUPPOSED to protect against this in the future.

luckily my camera was in warranty, took almost 3 months to get the part as they replace the entire vtr board.

I turn my camera off always when I plug it in, but I always leave my computer on with the firewire plugged in. I am scared this could happen to me. Where was it you bouhgt the cable?

i bought it from these guys...i'm not neccesarily endorsing them, they were the only ones who had it!

it confuses me because i mostly used a 4 pin firewire cable and i guess i'm wrong, but i thought only the 6 pin cables passed power?

i'm just damn happy it was under warranty! replacing a whole board out of warranty would suck.

the guy who is fixing mine seemed really decent and his company does all the maintenance for a couple of large universities and the most commong repair he sees is blown firewire ports on the larger format panasonics.

i wouldn't have even noticed but i got a new laptop a while ago and went to capture some footage, normally i use a sony deck or at home a cheaper sony 1 chip to capture.

Yep. I've had the same problem. The shop is where my DVX has been for the last 3 weeks. The firewire port doesn't work. Hope it doesn't take 3 months.........

Matthew,

what was the symtom when your fiirewire port was blown out? Were you not able to capture at all, or were you only able to capture intermittently? On my 100a I'm having problems with my capture where it was skip frames.

thanks
