Firewire playback problem

When capturing footage into FCP, my firewire connection works fine, but using the firewire to playback captured footage from FCP, isn't working right. I am getting lots of black boxes all over the LCD of my DVX & on my TV monitor, audio cutting in and out, but it plays back fine on FCP. This makes me think that it's a firewire issue, but why would the firewire work correctly one way, but not the other? Here's what I have tried: using different firewire cables, using different cameras to playback through, refreshing the AV devices on FCP, and still, nothing has worked. I can also not print back to tape becasue the same problem occurs. I usually go to DVD so it's not a big deal, but if it should work, then I want it to. Anybody ever have this same problem?

There's a lot to check in your User and System preferences, and in the A/V preferences. Go over them with a fine toothed comb! It's not your Firewire, it's your system set up.

What Mac are you on, how much RAM, what's your hard drive set up?

Also, the book "Apple Pro Training Series; Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System" is a killer book for getting the most out of your FCP system. I highly recommend all FCP users get this book if you're serious about the system.

But let us know what Mac you're on (model & CPU), how much RAM, and what your hard drive configuration is. All three can effect your problem. I can tell you it is not a FireWire port or cable problem.

I had a similiar problem when I first started out.

There were two things that I changed that solved the problem for me.

1st - Anytime I would want to export via firewire (print to video) I would save the project file on the desktop. If the file is saved on one of my external drives, it would give me that problem.

2nd - I was using a firewire hub to plug mulitiple drives into my machine. I made sure to plug my camera directly into the computer and not into the hub.

Try that and see if it works.
