Firewire error: Portable Hard Drive and now PC.

(Not sure if this is the right category for this post, and I failed to find anything on the matter here, on manufacturers website, and google)

So in the midst of exams, trying to cut together a demo reel, etc... my portable hard drive decided to stop working (at least via 1394). I've tried it on two or three other PCs, with similar results.. It seems to work via USB 2 (which my pc is without). Tried using seagate's tools to check it no errors coming up.... Annoying but not my main concern.

After it stopped working it seems that none of my three firewire/IEE1934 ports are working on my pc. I'm trying to capture using a cam/deck that I have tested on other computers to satisfaction.

I'm thinking the Hard Drive did something to the ports, is there any way any dvxuser knows of resetting the ports via bios or in XP?
If I could reset the hard drive's ports as well that would be great but it seems unlikely.

Being left without capture/export,storage, and general connectivity is a little frustrating I'd appreciate any advice I can get.
Cheers for now

Obvious question, but -- have you tried different cables? If you're using the same cable to test with, I'd suspect the cable.

Control Panel / System icon / Hardware tab / Device Manager button / IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller (click on the +).

There will be yellow or red indicators of hardware or driver issues. Double click on the device name and fish around. Also check to see if the ports are "enabled".
