Firewire Compatibility

I've started editing a project in FCP at the local film forum. However, their HDD space is limited and I still have more footage to capture. Thus I'm planning on getting my own external FireWire HDD, but as someone who's not very familiar with MAC hardware I was was wondering, will any old third party Firewire HDD work with a MAC, or do I have to buy one from Apple directly?

This seemed to be the most suitable section to post this in, as the Hardware section seems to pertain to cameras rather than computers.
