Firewire Cards

Is there a difference between all the firewire cards out there? There's definately a difference in price.
 
Here's the only difference I've noticed (from personal experience).

I have a sound blaster audigy card with built in firewire in my editor. The motherboard for that system also has on board firewire. When I edit in Avid using a project stored on an external firewire drive I get better results (faster timeline updates, etc) if the drive is connected to the on board firewire rather than the FW port on the sound card.

That's the only quirk I've experienced. I also have a cheapie 4 port PCI FW card that I've never had trouble with.
