Read this before somewhere and cant remember... is there any degradation in say a 30 ft fw cable?

No. In digital it either works or it doesn't. There isn't much middle ground!
(I suppose theoretically you might just get a very unlikely combination of cable length and cable connectors loss that was exactly at the failure threshold and the connection might then be intermittently unreliable.).
Edit: a poor quality cable with inadequate shielding might also be susceptible to outside interference and the longer the cable the more it would pick up interference.
