My Dad is a photographer, and just got a 5D about 2 years ago. He still shoots the majority of his film on medium and large format film, but he always brings his 5D for it's convenience. He doesn't like laptops, or having to carry them around. But he was asking me if there is such a device where you can transfer the files from SD cards to either clear a card or back up the files. Is it the firestore that you can do that with P2 cards? Anyway, thats what came to mind, and I figured if they made such a device for clearing p2 cards, they've got to have it for SD cards.

No, the firestore does not do this. P2 card readers cost nearly half as much as the HVX camera.

If I understand you correctly, you want to stick an SD card into a device, transfer it off, and re-use the card. But, you don't want a laptop. Since you will need an intelligent device that can understand the Canon's filesystem, I don't know what to suggest.
Doesn't the 5d shoot to compactflash and not SD cards?

That's exactly what I meant, thanks for clearing that up.
And your probably right about the compactflash. I was just guessing it took SD cards.

I thought it was part of the coolness factor to pull out your Macbook Pro and transfer footage or images.
