Firestore Tapeless mode works!

OK, I keep seeing posts about people not being able to properly enter into Tapeless mode with their HVX200 and their Firestore FS-100. I just got mine today, and was able to get it to work (although it is kinda quirky).

In your Firestore...
Go to the "Control" menu and choose "Tapeless".

On you HVX200...
Go to your Camera Menu>Other Options>1394 Control. Then choose "Ext".

You are now setup properly. OK, this is where is gets weird. I don't know if there is a special order you need to do this or not...BUT, the only way I've gotten it to work is I do this...

Make sure the firewire is hooked between the two.
Turn off the camera.
Put the FS-100 into Record-pause mode by hitting the RECORD button once.
Now turn on your camera and it should work properly.
If it doesn't work, turn your camera off and back on again.

Now you should be able to use your cameras record button and it will initiate the FS-100 each time.

I still haven't figured out how to play the clips that I recorded back onto the camera. But, I haven't messed around with it much.

Listening to people going on about the firestore makes me gald I'm using P2 cards. If they were half priced I would pick up a couple more 4BG cards. Maybe even an 8GB one...if they were more avalible.

But I guess if your shooting stuff in long form then the Firestore is really the only way to go.

I have P2 Cards too. I just don't rely entirely on them, now that I have a Firestore as well. You are going to hear a bunch of confusion about the Firestore for the next month or so. It just came out. Remember how many people couldn't get their HVX200's to work when they first came out? Hell it took me a month to get the P2 Viewer to work. All of this is very new to a lot of people. People aren't having problems with their Firestores...they just don't understand how to use them yet. Which is to be expected.

Why? The firestore is the price of one 8GB P2 card and records 12 times as much.

Barry,

I hope I don't look like an idiot, but why are my 1394 control menus "blued Out"?

Duh...got it Barry. The old saying............it rolls down a hill.

You're right on with your observations. If they had listened to end users..... It's close, but not smart. I have suspicions, but where do you think the logic design was done? I reeks of old Bosch gear. We need hackers to get this thing, not that I would ever endorse such a thing!

Would love to give you this thing for a weekend to figure out.

Where are you buying your P2 cards at?!? Where ever it is, you're greatly overpaying.

Got a FS-100 yesterday-
Got questions today-

1- The timecode on the HVX200 doesn't run if there's no card in the camera, so you can't use it's timecode for the FS-100.
No matter what TC options I set on the FS-100, the time code always starts each take at 00:00:00
Is there a way to get the time code on the HVX to rec run without a card in the camera, or a way to get the FS to operate correctly?

2- You can playback the FS thru the HVX (no thumbnails, however), but the video is not passed out the component jacks like the P2 footage is.
How can you check your shots on location if you can't see it on a monitor-
there's only so much you can see on that tiny screen, and there's no video out on the FS.

These are just my two immediate questions, that are really hampering it's useability.
Anybody have any answers?

Hi CMV-711,

1) The COUNTER display (default) on the FS-100 just counts the duration of the current recording. If you wish to view TC being recorded in the stream, press the button below DISP on the LCD and it will scroll through the TC display options. As long as you have EXT TC selected in the SETUP menu, you will see the HVX TC in the display setting marked TC. If you have no media in the HVX, you can set FS-100 to REC RUN (or FREE RUN or REGEN) in the SETUP menu and create TC from there. But you must have the DISP setting on TC.

2) Regarding playback to the HVX from FS-100, it appears that an input on the HVX FireWire port does not pass through the analog codec for display on the component out.

Hope that helps,
