Firestore sleeve/cover?

After spending the weekend shooting onto my fs100 in subzero temps and winds reaching 45mph, I am pleased to say my hvx+fs held up nicely.

It dawned on me, during a 231 stairway to a frozen beach, that I do not trust my $2K investment for HD storage with a $5 plastic belt clip.

Has anyone seen or made a DIY sleeve for the fs? Think of iPods.. there are all kinds of sleeves and covers and protectors for it, most with larger, more robust belt clips/attachments. The fs users could really benefit from a fat iPod sleeve, no? I'd purchase one right away... FW port covers, thin screen over the buttons/lcd, and vents for airflow...

oh, I plan to post some clips from my trip later this week, after I've thawed completely :)

that is EXACTLY what I was thinking about this morning! strange...

Eventhough I do not have my hvx yet (and I am not too sure about the FS-100), I thought it might be handy to have a silicone sleeve for the Firestore... or something like neoprene / leather made... hmm

ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH YOUR FS-100 and would recommend it instead of P2 cards (2x 8GB) and a Notebook for backing up.

It's really all about what kind of shooting you plan to do.

If you can afford to take a break in the action to offload footage, and don't need more than 16 minutes continuous (although you could maybe swap one, xfer, insert fresh) of HD, then go with the P2.

I do lots of event work, and at the time with the p2 card price point it was a pretty easy decision for me. Now that I've used my fs-100, I'm real comfortable with it (save for the sleeve we both want :))

Now that prices have dropped, p2 is getting closer to being a budget friendly solution for long format tapeless recording. I find that beign tethered isn't too bad, but the belt clip makes me nervous. Saying that, you can lock the keypad and put it in a backpack or shouldpack or even a large pocket (air vent blockage?)

It's pricey but beats a $65000 DVCPROHD Deck.

There's TONS of alternatives to the belt clip. Bebob Box FS, Geardear has a cage, lots of stuff. Search, look around, it's a subject that has dozens of threads on these boards.

Geardear cage is remarkably sturdy and I basically keep my FS-100 in it all the time.

I have found nothing better.

Right on guys.

I've seen the bebob, but wasn't impressed for at $380. I was meaning something that could still be clipped or fastened to your waist (think bescor batteries) more securely and give the unit protection from dust, scratches, snow, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Full on sleeves or padding to encompass the FS100 would hinder airflow. And since Hard Drives need to be cool to work as safely as possible, any protection for it needs to be cage like.

lowelpro makes a pouch that fits the fs-100, perfectly. you can attach it to a waist pack and you are set. only problem is you have to pull out the unit a little when you want to check it while shooting.

I would not use that pouch with the FS-100 since it would impede the airflow and cause the unit to overheat.

Okay I will buy the geardear thingie... since I am going back to Germany in about 9 weeks anyways and will have the FS100 in about 8 weeks... it will be perfect. Plus it is REALLY a very good price! I LIKE IT! :violin:

Yeah, that sleeve could be problematic as is, but with a couple mods, (air vents, clear plastic LCD/button cover, could be very nice... i like.

I will give manufacturing one like that a try... asap.

I think about this EVERY time I clip it to my belt/the camera. There's got to be a good, simple, cheap solution.

I'll put some thought into it too.
