Firestore settings for HVX - Need some help...

All,

We're new to the tapeless world, so please bear with the basic question about the Firestore.

We're wanting to shoot in 720/24p. The camera is set on the format. We have also set the Firestore as suggested.

Presently, to get more time out of the Firestore, I have it set at DVCPro 50. But when I start recording (we are just testing) the Firestore resets itself to DVCProHD and only have 111 minutes of record time.

TWO QUESTIONS:

1) Is there a way to set the Firestore so that I can get more time?

2) Also, if I'm only getting 111 minutes of footage, how much external storage am I going to need for 80 hours of footage?

First- the Firestore is resetting itself to DVCPROHD because the camera is set to a DVCPROHD format. To record DVCPRO50 on the Firestore you must set the camera to DVCPRO50.

In order to get more time in DVCPROHD 720/24p- set the camera to 720/24p and the Firestore to PN. This will give you the increased record time you are looking for.

For storage, figure one gig for each minute of video when recording in 1080. So for 80 hours that's 4.8 terabytes.

Jim thanks for the tip.

I think it helped. So should I be getting about 46 minutes on a 16 gig P2 card? Also, what would be the difference if the camera was also set to 720pn? Does that stretch my time even further?

I'm looking to get more time as we will be in the field quite a bit and I don't want to have to off load the drive too much.

Lastly (on sort of the same subject), what do you guys do to remedy the short battery life of the FS-100? It's only about 1.5 hours right? Is that filming time or life of the battery time?

I think it's something like 34 minutes in 720/24pN on a 16 gb card. You cannot have the camera in 720pN mode and record to the firestore. The camera only records pN to P2.

I would recommend buying the larger battery for the FS-100. That's good for about 3 hours.

I dunno if its in your budget or not but I just got a zacuto base plate setup with v-mount batteries that attach to the rear plate. I can run my firestore off a d-tap (along with monitors, etc.) and those batteries and power it for several days.

Thanks for all the help.

Unfortunately, we still must be doing something wrong. I have the FS-100 in "pn" mode and the camera in 720p/24p mode. I'm still only getting 111 minutes.

Does this sound right?
