Firestore FS100 - Deconstructed (Err, well, I took it apart)...

Hi Ryan,
I know. I've been figting witht he cable guys to get me a sample of the custom cable, but they want me to place an order before they provide me a sample. Which is weird, because if I place the order and their cable doesn't work for me, then what. I bet they just make all the cables for me and now I'm stuck with them. Its an uphill battle when you are a small company contacting these guys. :(
I'm still working on it though. :)

Also I have been busy with my monitor which I'm showing at DV Expo in LA today. :)

Sounds frustrating! Well, keep us posted. I'm looking for a good solution for a trip, and yours sounds like the best one.

Good luck to you!

Hi Siniarch, what you are doing with your fs-100 is amazing.. but what if i just want to replace the drive inside (100gb) with a 160gb drive.. will it support it?

Hi Siniarch,

Just wanted to check in and see where you are with the FS-100 add-a-drive project. I am keen to order the mod and know of quite a few others who want it too- so let us know!

Thanks so much!

Hvxdreamer,
Sorry about the timeline. these guys just keep stalling. I'll give it one more push and I'll get back to you guys soon.
I'm very persistent and that usually pays off.
Thanks,
Luis

The problem with this setup is that you are inserting the HDD into the unit and the pins on the HDD are exposed. these pins are not made for multiple insertions. So they are succeptible to breaking and then you will have a really hard time getting your footage out of the HDD.

I experimented with a similar solution, but I felt it just wasn't reliable enough to be used in a production environment.

I have a working unit of my own, but the reason why I haven't released it is because I don't feel is clean enough to be sold as a professional product. when I have something that I feel I can put my name on it, I will release it.

But for those that don't want to spend alot of money, this might be the right thing to get. Good luck Stranirumori

Yeah, pretty sure it is a standard ATA 6 5400rpm IDE 44pin laptop interface. This drive is I think what they are using in the FS250 version, I could be wrong, hope not. This will be great for doing long haul shoots by myself.

Let us know ... after installation ...
If it works fine, I'll be next to upgrade my FS

how did your swap go? I'm thinking about doing the same thing except not just for more record time. I have trouble shooting bands. The vibrations cause the drive to skip. I have a 160 gig now. I'm thinking about a 250 momenus drive from Seagate, but they're SATA so Id have to convert it somehow. I have seen a kit from HDrevolutions.com which makes it so you can swap drives out and it also switches it to SATA. I'd really like to use that with a SSD!
